COVID strikes again!

For the last few days of our cruise I was feeling a bit under the weather. I thought that it was a bit of a cold, coupled with some diarrhoea ... and took the appropriate medication in order to carry on enjoying my cruise as best I could.

On Wednesday afternoon I attended the Installation meeting of my Mother Lodge … and about halfway through I began to sweat profusely, and my temperature seemed to go through the roof. I managed to get to the end of the meeting but decided to give the after-meeting meal (which we call a Festive Board) a miss and drove home very carefully and somewhat slowly.

When I got home, Sue insisted that I took a COVID test as my symptoms seemed to match those of the latest variant … and a very faint line on the test indicated that I had the dreaded virus yet again!

Last night I slept quite well, and I’ve spent most of today resting, although I did go outside to do thirty minutes of gardening. It raised a bit of a sweat, and although I felt tired afterwards, I felt a lot better for doing something physical.

I’ll be taking another COVID test later today, and hope that it will show that I’m clear of the virus. If not, then I’ll carry on as best I can until I’m over this latest brush with COVID.

  1. Ouch. Sounds like a tough time. Sorry that covid struck again. Feels like this covid world is never going to end. Anyway, hope that you are feeling better by now and that you have some happy cruise memories to keep you going.

    1. Robbie,

I think that we will have to live with COVID in the same way that we have to live with ‘flu: an unpleasant and potentially dangerous virus that generates new versions or variants every year.

I’m feeling a bit better today, and I hope that I’m over the worst. Hopefully I’ll be able to write my ‘I have been to …’ blog post tomorrow.

      All the best,

      Bob

    3. Robbie,

Cheers! I’ll do my best as I find that blogging helps to keep my mind engaged and reduces the impact of the virus.

      All the best,

  3. Sorry to hear that, Bob. hope it didn't spoil your break. Cruise ships seem to be a bit of a breeding ground for Covid, perhaps? Anyway take it easy, and hopefully you'll be back to normal soon!

    1. David in Suffolk,

Cheers! Cruise ships tend to be a closed environment with air conditioning that recirculates the air. If one person has an airborne virus, it can quickly be transmitted to everyone else. Likewise, if an infected person doesn’t practice good personal hygiene, they can spread their infection to other passengers via handrails, doorhandles etc. The crew try to keep everything clean but however good a job they do, it only needs one person to be careless and an infection can spread like wildfire.

I’m feeling a bit better than I did, and hopefully that improvement will continue.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Mark Cordone,

I’m finding that a mixture of rest with some mental and physical exercise seems to be helping me to get through this bout of COVID.

      All the best,

  7. What rotten luck, Bob. But it seems to be one of those variants that hits hard to begin with, then gradually tails off. Hope so and that you'll be back in business soon. Get well.

  8. Really sorry to read this Bob but glad it did not spoil your much needed break. Four times is certainly most unlucky I must say! Hope that you recover quickly.

    1. Lee,

It’s one of the risks of going on a cruise. If someone has a virus, everyone seems to catch it!

I’m feeling a bit better today, and hope that I’ll be fully recovered by Sunday.

      All the best,

      Bob

  9. That is not good, hope you recover quickly Bob. Covid has unfortunately changed the world so much. It is now 3-4 years and no end to it in sight yet. Best wishes - Quinn

Unfortunately, COVID is here to stay, and we are just going to have to live with it. Ironically, I got a text reminder today that I’m due for my next booster jab, and I hope to have that done soon.

      All the best,

      Bob

  10. Sorry to hear you've been struck down by Covid...its definitely still around. My wife and I have both had it recently and lots of work colleagues have also been ill. Thankfully much milder than last time round. As you say I think its something that's hear to stay like seasonal flu

    1. Alastair,

Sorry to read that you and your wife have also had COVID. My current bout is slightly worse than the last time and seems to be hanging around somewhat longer.

I recently read that COVID is now regarded as endemic in the population, and will reoccur regularly for the foreseeable future.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Martin S.,

I had hoped that I’d be over it by now, but although I am feeling a lot better, I’m still testing positive. Hopefully it will be gone soon.

  12. Sorry to hear this Bob and hope you are now on the mend? SWMBO felt iffy yesterday and with very similar symptoms to yours, but the Covid test came up negative. We're hoping it's just a Summer cold and nothing else...

    1. Steve J.,

I just tested myself, and although I still feel as if I have the remnants of a bad cold, I seem to be free of the virus. This means that I can get on with doing a few things ... like finishing the next PW Compendium!

      All the best,

      Bob

  13. Hi BOB,
What rotten luck for you- getting Covid again is a pain. Although authorities have deemed the virus as not being a global pandemic any more- it still pays to wear a mask, follow social distancing and especially avoid crowds. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I take precautions whenever I can, but frankly it seems a bit pointless when almost everyone else doesn't bother. Still, I seem to be on the mend now and I am ready to start working on projects again.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob
