Flocking the bases of my World War Two collection: A progress report

I began flocking the bases of my 20mm World War Two collection with natural-coloured cork granules a few days ago, and so far I've completed about a third of them. I've not rushed to complete this task as I'm doing a bit of reorganisation as I proceed.

I estimate that it will take me another week or so to finish this, and by then I hope to have the first draft of the latest iteration of RED FLAGS & IRON CROSSES ready for some play-testing using the newly revitalised collection.

In the meantime, here are some more photographs of play-tests of the rules from 2008:

  1. Hello there Bob,

Just a quick question for you - what is your basing standard in terms of figure multiples for the WW2 collection? Are you using singles or twins etc? Is it still the same as for the pictures above, flock notwithstanding?

    Asking for a friend….:-)

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

After a LOT of thought, I decided to base all my figures on single-figure bases as it is a more flexible option. If I want multi-figure bases, I can always use Warbases sabot bases.

I hope that your ‘friend’ finds this useful.

      All the best,

      Bob

PS. My single-figure bases are almost all new, steel one pence coins. They are cheaper than washers (!!!!) and magnetic.

  2. Good to see you making progress on this front now you've decided which route to go down. I can see why the cork granules work better with these hex tiles than classic old school green.

    1. Steve J.,

It’s the sort of task that I can easily fit in with some of the day-to-day calls on my time (e.g. gardening, taking my wife shopping, visiting the hospital). I can also do it whilst listening to TMS!

As the cork granules are naturally coloured and not dyed it also means that there are no problems with matching the colour of the batches of flock that I use.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob

Your scenery tiles are looking good. I particularly like the trench system and gun emplacements.

Unfortunately I cannot take the credit for the terrain tiles as I bought them from Kallistra!

      All the best,

  4. Hi Bob,
Glad your doing the re-basing and re-organisation too - definitely looking forward to seeing the results of your endeavors. Any further news on your upcoming Radiothereapy? I'll probably have my first WW2 Battle tomorrow (Monday) in 1/72nd scale. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I’m really enjoying this task ... and as I’ve been doing it, I’ve had a number of ideas for my next set of wargame rules.

I hope to get more information about when my radiotherapy will start when I see the consultant.later this month.

I’m looking forward to seeing your forthcoming WW2 battle as I’m sure that it will help me to maintain my enthusiasm for wargaming the period.

      All the best,

      Bob
