I spent quite some time playing around with various track plans, some of which were quite complicated. In the end I have decided to stick with something that is simple but works ... an oval with a single siding.
The track plan looks like this:
(N.B. The wires that provide to power to the tracks and control the point/turnout to the siding will be hidden when the track is actually fixed to the baseboard.)
This allows me space to add several buildings, including a coastal defence fort (NOT the Airfix one, although I did toy with the idea!), a Brennan Torpedo Launching Station, and several small railway halts (i.e. small stopping stations that usually consist of a simple platform and small station building).
Looks good Bob. Are you going to scratch build the coastal defence and Torpedo Launching Station?

DeleteI have yet to fix the track to the baseboard, and when I do I will be drilling holes through it in the appropriate places for the wires.
I have recently begun work on building the Brennan torpedo launching station and I will them move on to building the coastal defence fort/battery.

From a railway modelling perspective, only having 1 siding is very limiting for operations. I would suggest a desirable minimum would be 2 sidings. That way you could run a variation of the "Inglenook" switching puzzle. The good thing about Kato track is that it is easy to change a track layout.

DeleteI’ve tried different combinations ranging from a simple oval to one with four points/turnouts and in the end, I settled for this layout. I have yet to fix the track down and may well try to work in another set of points/turnout if I can for exactly the reasons you make in your comment. Bear in mind this is my first attempt to build a model railway and I’m on a steep learning curve.
