The Third Portable Wargame Compendium: Another progress report

The current draft has been proofread by the incomparable Arthur Harman, and it is already ninety-three pages long. It is worth noting that the First Compendium had 108 pages and the Second Compendium had 132 pages.

At present, the Contents looks like this:

I know that there are at least two more contributions in the pipeline, and I hope that the Compendium will be ready for publication somewhat earlier than I expected.

  1. Although I don't play as many TPW as I would like and tend to be mainly into Horse & Musket, I have bought all the Portable Wargame books, as each seems to have great ideas that can be used with other rules. My one complaint is the last couple of books have been large format books, instead of the smaller version. Of course I like reading them at work when I am in a van so small is good.

    1. Jhnptrqn,

Thanks for buying the previous books.

The size of the Compendia is determined by the restrains imposed by the printing process. However, once it is published, please get in contact and I’ll see if I can get a smaller format version produced.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I think that all the listed contents are of interest to me, even if I don't play the specific periods (yet). I'm especially interested to read the Medieval version of the Ancients PW. Hope the recovery is going well by the way.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

I hope that there are lots of ideas in the articles that are applicable across a range of periods. As to my recovery, I’m getting better very slowly.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. This looks wonderful! I think this might be the best compendium yet, and that's saying alot since the first two were great!

    1. Mark Cordone,

I think that the next Compendium will have plenty that will be of interest to most PW users. One thing that I really do like is the trend for users to move from one-off games to fighting short, narrative campaigns.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Some tempting stuff there! I have had success introducing chess variants into the weekly club at work and am hoping to try TPW on the 8x8 boards with Paperboys bases soon.

    1. Jennifer,

It sounds as if you are really getting to grips with the PW ... and you do so, you'll hopefully discover just how versatile the rules are.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. You can scratch my contribution if you don't see anything from me by the 29th. School is out for the summer and I'm busy keeping my boys out of trouble and we have lots of traveling to do.
I look forward to the next book, no matter what.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

I quite understand … and thanks for your initial offer. Perhaps you’ll be able to contribute to the fourth compendium. (I really hope so!)

      All the best,

  7. Bob -
Just back from Oz, (an hour ago) and planning to get in amongst the Gettysburg LPW (Large Portable Wargame) project over the next few days. I'll try to get something worthwhile out tp you within the next week or so.
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

I hope that you enjoyed your time seeing your family.

I’d love to incorporate your Gettysburg Big Battle PW in the Compendium as it would be a nice balance with the FP3x3PW and ShamBattle/PW articles.

      All the best,

      Bob
