Caught out by British Summer Time!

I have a lot of things that I planned to do today, and I set my alarm to wake me up early to make sure I had plenty of time to do what I had to do and to give me some time to do things that I wanted to do ... but I forgot that British Summer Time started last night and that the clocks went forward an hour!

I cannot ever remember this happening to me before, and it probably shows how much recent events have 'thrown' me out of kilter. So rather than spend some time this morning writing the new draft of THE PORTABLE WARGAME rules, I am off to do some of the things I have to do.

  1. A similar thing happens to me when a new year starts; whenever I have to write down the number of the new year, such as when I am filling in a form for example, I find myself writing down the number of the previous year!
Sometimes it doesn't happen but when it does I usually do it at least once or even twice!

  2. We sprang ahead early this year but Spring couldn't keep up and winter is back.

I'm glad to hear that your wife sent you to the show. Wise woman. Its important to keep some balance in difficult times to avoid burn out.

  3. Paul,

It is usually March before I start to get the year right on anything that I have to fill in!

I blame my age ... when I can work out how old I am.

    All the best,

    Bob

  4. Ross Mac,

There are rumblings that the UK will remain on Summer Time next Autumn and not revert to Greenwich Mean Time. This is intended to be part of a move to equalise the UK's time with that used in other members of the EU.

My wife has lots of good ideas, including making sure that I don't 'crack' under the strain of trying to cope with things at the moment.

    Roll on retirement!

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. We don't think changing the clocks to suit 'those down South' is a good idea in our part of 'united' kingdom. It'll just give the nationalists more ammunition.

Having said that anything that you and your good wife can pursue to improve your daily life can only be a good thing!

We tried that in '68 to '71. It was a complete failure then and I do not see that anything has changed...

  7. The only problem with going with EU time is they are a lot further South than us in the North of U.K. think it was 1970 when we last tryed it - not a success , oh and I change every clock in the house before hand EXCEPT my alarm clock ! !

  8. Jim Duncan, Mike, and Mosstrooper,

I see no reason for the change ... but then I see no reason why the French have to be in a different time zone from the UK when they are directly south of the UK.

I suspect that it is more about national pride than for practical reasons ... and there I will leave the matter to rest!

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Daylight Relocation Time (US) has always seemed rather silly to me...

  10. Gratuitous Saxon Violence,

I am afraid to say that although I have heard of DST (Daylight Saving Time), Daylight Relocation Time has passed me by.

    All the best,

    Bob

  11. Bob,

Back when the Federal Government more or less mandated Daylight Saving Time across the country, Congressmen from agricultural states protested that changing the clocks would confuse cows as to when they should be giving milk. True story.

Just when you think you've heard it all...

  12. Chris,

Somehow I can believe that. Our cats are used to being fed at a particular time each morning, and wake us up if we are late. They were very confused on Sunday because we were earlier than they expected!

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. Daylight Savings Time exists for one reason and one reason only: the Miracle of Gaelcon.

Gaelcon, being the biggest gaming convention in Ireland, happens the bank holiday weekend of every October here. It is, to be brief, glorious.

The weekend being what it is, this normally means we end up having an extra hour on Saturday night, as the clocks go back. The knock on effects are:
1: more time in the pub.
2: more time recovering from the pub before more gaming.

As you can see, these are both vital parts of the convention experience, and the lack of them at last year's convention due to a traitorous calender (the 31st falling on a Sunday) was a distinct and unpleasant weight hanging over all of us. Obviously we must all standup to the EU and say "NO! You can take our banks, our money and our pride, but you will NEVER take our Miracle of Gaelcon!"

  14. Arquinsiel,

That is the best (and most convincing) reason I have every heard for Daylight Saving Time!

    Erin go Bragh!

  15. Also I should clarify that Gaelcon is always on the weekend before the last Monday of the month, to take advantage of the bank Holiday, and the timechange happenes on the fourth weekend, meaning we mostly but not always end up having it.

  16. Arquinsiel,

It makes even more sense to have Gaelcon on that weekend.

    All the best,

    Bob
