Making my basic 10cm terrain squares

Over the past weeks I have been making a number of 10cm terrain squares. I began by buying a number of pre-cut 2.5mm-thick 10cm plywood squares online from Belle Vous and pieces of A4-sized green felt from Hobbycraft.

To glue the plywood squares to the felt, I ‘painted’ a very liberal coat of PVA glue onto each square, which I then placed glue side down onto the felt. I used a variety of heavy objects to press each square firmly into the plywood and to hold them in place until the glue was thoroughly dry.

I then cut around each square using a rotary cutting tool.

I then sealed the edge of each square with PVA glue, and once that had dried, I did the same to the back of each square. (This also helps to reduce the amount of warping that inevitably takes place.

I then finished off the basic green terrain square by sealing the felt side of the terrain square with a coat of PVA glue.

  1. BOB,
If I was glueing Felt onto MDF I'd use Contact Adhesive - simply apply the adhesive to both adjoining surfaces with a spatula- wait 5 minutes until tacky - then press the two parts together- finished. I'm far to impatient to use White Wood Glue- for most of my Building now I use Contact Adhesive and Super Glue...the Super Glue for small surfaces -sets in 10 seconds. Enjoy making your Terrain Bob- look forward to seeing it all in the finished state. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

I tried using spray contact adhesive, and found that although the felt glued to the wood very quickly, it was very messy … so I decided to use PVA. It’s slower but less problematic.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
The Contact Adhesive I use comes in a Tin- it goes under the name of 'Selleys GEL GRIP'. Best Wishes. KEV.

    3. Kev Robertson (Kev),

The most common branded contact adhesive found in the UK is Evostick, which mainly comes in tubes.

      All the best,

  2. Good to see the work in progress, and your cottage industry "tools"!! They will soon mount up in number. Are these all flat squares where you will put terrain on top in action from hills to buildings and woods? Carl

    1. Carl,

The hills have their own terrain squares, but buildings etc., don’t … at the moment. It will become clearer in my next blog post.

      All the best,

      Bob
