Wargame Development's Handbook (3rd Edition)

Back in 1984, just four years after the foundation of Wargame Developments, Jim Wallman wrote the first edition of the WD Handbook. It was revised and re-written by Tim Price in 1994, and the third edition has recently been revised and re-written for a second time by John Armatys and John Bassett OBE,

The latest edition is now available as a download in PDF format from the Wargame Developments website, and it is hoped to produce a printed version of the handbook in due course.

The book is divided into the following chapters:

  • Introduction
  • What is Wargame Developments?
  • The Origins of WD
  • COW (The Conference of Wargamers)
  • The Nugget
  • Game Design
  • Umpired Games & Free Kriegsspiel
  • Muggergames
  • Map Games
  • Voice Games
  • Multi-Player Solo Games
  • One Brain-Cell Rules
  • Tactical Exercise Without Troops (TEWT)
  • Simulators
  • Committee Games
  • Megagames
  • Matrix Games
  • Confrontation Analysis/Dilemma Analysis Game
  • Virtual Gaming
  • Glossary of WD Terms
  • Notes for Presenters and Attendees at WD Events
  • The Wargame Developments Constitution
  • Tables of Probabilities

There is a lot of useful stuff in the handbook that will appeal to both members and non-members of Wargame Developments ... and it's free!

    1. David in Suffolk,

It is an interesting book … and compares rather well with the recently published professional UK and US handbooks. Read and enjoy!

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. PDL (Paul),

Its well worth spending some time reading it. You may well get an insight into the work done over the years by members of Wargame Developments.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. This is a beefy document! There's way more in here than the usual bylaws and standards of formatting memoranda for the notes of the subcommittee meetings. I may even print this out for bedtime reading.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

Its actually difficult to understand how WD has developed and functioned over the past 43 years without this handbook. It can be a bit dense in places, but it encapsulates a lot of stuff.

      All the best,

      Bob
