‘We feel just as heavy as lead …’

On Monday afternoon Sue and I had our annual ‘flu jabs and COVID booster jabs … and on Tuesday we both felt under the weather. Neither of us seemed to have any energy or motivation to do anything, and Sue summed it as feeling as if our bodies just felt heavy.

Judging by what I’ve read on the Internet, the current ‘flu jab seems to have this as a common side effect and this feeling should pass in a couple of days. In the meantime, I’m trying to motivate myself to do my daily exercises and do some sorting out in my toy/wargameroom.

The title of this post comes from the chorus of the song ‘Oh! What a Lovely War’.

Oh! Oh! Oh! it's a lovely war,
Who wouldn't be a soldier eh?
Oh! It's a shame to take the pay.
As soon as reveille is gone
We feel just as heavy as lead,
But we never get up till the sergeant brings
Our breakfast up to bed
Oh! Oh! Oh! it's a lovely war,
What do we want with eggs and ham
When we've got plum and apple jam?
Form fours! Right turn!
How shall we spend the money we earn?
Oh! Oh! Oh! it's a lovely war.

  1. My family got our COVID/flu shots a couple weeks ago Being young, the boys had no issues but the wife and I felt a bit dizzy and feverish for 24 hours. The upside is I was able to take my boys to see a band perform without worry of catching anything serious.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

I actually feel worse today than I did yesterday but Sue feels slightly better. Thanks to the drugs I am on, my immune system is compromised, which it is why having the jabs is essential but it leaves me prone to any after effects.

      All the best,

      Bob

PS. I hope the that band performance was worth going to.

    1. Tiberian General (Willz),

I might be feeling rough … but it’s better than actually getting ‘flu and/or COVID. As to a book … well, I’ve been trying to read CASTLES OF STEEL, but I keep dozing off.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hope you feel better soon Bob. Our son is on immuno supressants for Crohns, but never has any side effects other than sore arms, lucky thing!

    1. Steve J.,

Cheers! My nephew also has Crohns, and as far as I know he hasn’t had any side effects from the jabs. In my case, my doctor has advised me that I’m likely to get minor side effects but that it’s better that I do and avoid catching full blown ‘flu and/or COVID.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Hope you're feeling better soon Bob. Like you say, it's better than catching the flu or Covid, especially being immunosuppresed.
That picture reminds me of one of the stories my O-Level History teacher used to tell us about his dad in the Great War. Mr Taylor Sr told his son (our teacher) that him and his comrades got so bored of Tickler's Apple Jam that they used to exchange it with a Saxon regiment in the trenches opposite.
"Each morning we would throw over our jam, and back would come sausages. Then one night the Saxons were replaced by a Prussian regiment and when we threw over our tins of jam, back came 'tater mashers'" [German stick grenades]
"What did you do Dad?" asked the younger Mr Taylor.
"We filled our pants lad. We filled our pants".

    1. Nundanket,

I woke up this morning feeling much better than I had. I still feel a bit tired and have some aching muscles and joints, but nothing as under the weather as I felt yesterday.

I love the story about front-line units swapping tins of jam for sausages, and it reinforces what I have read about the difference between Saxon and Prussian units.

      All the best,

      Bob
