Laid low by a cold

Having had a great time celebrating my birthday on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the vagaries of normal life reasserted themselves as Sunday night became Monday morning. The irritating cold that I had already had for over a week suddenly got a lot worse, and by the time I got out of bed on Monday morning my eyes itched, my sinuses hurt, and my head felt as if it was stuffed with cotton wool. Unfortunately my wife was also suffering from a cold, and as a result neither of us felt like doing much all day.

I had planned to begin fighting my mini-campaign on Monday, but in the end all I did was a bit of work preparing my new wargaming board. This is a 90cm x 60cm whiteboard that I bought in a branch of a large stationers on Sunday morning. (This idea was 'borrowed' from the BATTLEFIELDS & WARRIORS blog that is written by 'Norm'. Over the past year or so he has been developing a number of sets of hex-based wargame rules, including TIGERS AT MINSK. These use an eight x six grid of Hexon II terrain that just fits within the frame of a 90cm x 60cm pin board or whiteboard.)

It might seem odd that I have decided to try this idea out, especially as I have a table in my toy/wargames room that can be extended to give me a 6 foot x 4 foot playing surface, but as regular blog readers will already know, I have been designing wargames that can be fought in relatively small areas for some time ... and this looked like a really good concept to experiment with. One of the big advantages of the board is that I can set up the terrain for a battle on it and then move it without risking the whole lot coming apart.

With luck I will be feeling better later this week ... and when I am, I will begin fighting my mini-campaign.

  1. Looks like we are in tandem at the moment with obstacles to playing strewn ahead of us.

Hopefully we will both pick up a bit towards the end of the week.

  2. Fresh lemon and sliced ginger in hot water. Two or three cups a day. I've been doing this for three months now and nothing has taken hold. Very minor sniffles for a couple of days but nothing approaching a cold. Despite the plague infested office I work in!

    I've probably cursed myself now!

    Hope you feel better soon.

  3. Jim Duncan,

I hope that both of us are feeling much better in the near future so that we can get back to doing some wargaming.

    All the best,

  4. Bob,
I hope both of you will soon feel better.
Meanwhile, you can always jot down ideas on your new whiteboard!

  5. Andy McMaster,

Sounds like a good way to avoid catching a cold ... and even it is doesn't work, it will be something nice to drink during the colder months of the year.

Here's hoping that you don't catch a cold now!

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. Arthur1815,

I am feeling a bit better than I did ... and have used some of my more active moments to begin basing a few of my Napoleonic figures.

Hopefully I will be up to using my whiteboard/wargame board later this week. In the meantime I am recording my ideas using the 'Notes' application on my iPad.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Ross Mac,

Sue and I are slowly getting better ... and hopefully I will be able to try out the whiteboard-based wargame board by the weekend.

    All the best,

  9. Fitz-Badger,

Many thanks for your best wishes. We both slept fairly well last night, and although neither of us is over the cold we share, we are feeling somewhat better this morning.

    All the best,

    Bob

  10. Glad you are feeling a bit better. I have had my cold (coughing, sore throat, headache, aching muscles) for nearly ten days now!

My grandmother always recommended garlic and whisky in hot milk!

  11. Legatus Hedlius,

Sue and I are making slow but steady progress towards getting over our colds, although it sounds as if we haven't had it as bad as you have. I hope you get better soon.

Did your grandmother really recommend drinking this mixture? It sounds as if it could be quite something to get down!

    All the best,

    Bob
