Russian maps

I was recently offered something a little out of the ordinary ... four identical sets of four Russian maps (one of each map in 1:100,000, 1:50,000, 1:25,000, and 1:10,000) used to teach map-reading skills. My immediate thought was 'they will be useful' and I gratefully accepted the offer. The maps arrive today, and they look like this:

As the maps cover a variety of different terrain, I can see them being very useful when I want to 'generate' some terrain for battles between Axis and Soviet forces during the Second World War.

So, it's a big vote of thanks to Bill Roberts for thinking of me when he was disposing of these maps. I will certainly find a use for them ... and I suspect that other might do so as well!

  2. Those are really interesting- they could be used to run a game at differing command levels.

A great addition to your collection.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    1. Nigel Drury,

I'm afraid not ... and my Russian is almost non-existent. That said, it isn't too difficult to work out what means what.

      All the best,

    2. I have a large 1:10,000 Soviet map of my area, as you say much is obvious but a full translation would be helpful at times.

    3. Nigel Drury,

I might try to look for a translation online when time allows.

  4. Maps are magical!

Are they maps of a real area? If so if would be interesting to look it up on google maps with the satellite image turned on and/or checking street view. I tried that with my WW1 artillery map last fall.

    1. Ross Mac,

      I LOVE maps!

I'm not sure if the maps cover a real area, although it should be possible to identify whether or not they do ... once I translate some of the place names.

      All the best,

      Bob
