The title of this blog post is a quote by John Treadaway in his capacity as the editor of the latest issue (March 2021: Issue 455) of MINIATURE WARGAMES ... and having bought and read a copy, I can understand why!
Starting from the front, the first bit of traction I get is in Arthur Harman’s excellent article entitled HOOKE’S CASTLE: A SCENARIO FOR THE SIEGE RULES IN THE PORTABLE PIKE & SHOT WARGAME. The second mention I get is in Charles Kirke’s VIRTUAL WARGAME: REAL FIGURES: GRIDS, COVID & GAMING. Charles and his group of wargamers have used my PORTABLE WARGAMES rules as a starting point for their own distanced battles.
In the RECCE section, Chris Jarvis has written a very balanced review of my latest book, THE PORTABLE PIKE & SHOT WARGAME ... and the LAST WORD article was written by me! (This was the last thing I wrote before I went into hospital in December, and I must admit to having a bit of trepidation writing something entitled LAST WORD ... just in case that it was!)
MINIATURE WARGAMES is published by Warners Group Publications PLC, and costs £5.99.
Well done for the PW getting so many mentions Bob - yes "The Last Word" does seem an ominous title, though it's also what my wife always gets so can't be too bad..

Isn’t it part of the marriage ceremony that husbands have to accede the last word on any matter to their wife? I’m sure that what my wife told me!

My copy turned up in the post today. So far I've only skimmed through it - basically checking the book reviews - but it was quite a surprise to get to the back and see your face staring out at me! For some reason - and probably a bit unfairly - it brought to mind the "Wargamer of the Month" posts that Don Featherstone ran in the Newsletter back in the late 1960s.

It reminded me of the first, and last, time I had an article published. I think it was in Wargames Illustrated and I think it was sometime in the 1980s. It was called "I did it my way" and was intended to encourage other gamers to run their own wargames group at home. I well remember the excitement of having their photographer came to take photos of a game in our converted garage. And even more so seeing my very poor attempts in print on their glossy pages.
I hope that you will be tempted to submit more articles and extend your already high profile.

DeleteI have vague memories of reading that article ... but I’m not sure which magazine it was in or when I read it. I do - however - doubt that what you wrote was a ‘very poor attempt’!
I did have articles published in the mainstream magazines back in the 1980s and 1990s, but got fed up waiting to be paid for my efforts. In one case, I had to wait eighteen months to be paid for an article I had written, and that really put me off writing for them again.
I’m slowly getting better, although there have been a few speed bumps on my road to recovery.

ReplyDeleteHenry at Battlegames was the only one who paid me for articles etc. All previous articles & rules published in magazines were for the pleasure of seeing my name in print though I made some good and lasting friends through the publication of my MacDuff rules so I was well paid with something better than money.

It does not surprise me that you wrote for Henry ... and I bet that he paid promptly. Some other editors/publishers were more than a little dilatory when it came to paying for articles I had written.
My mother used to buy every magazine that published an article by me, and my father presented them to me when she died. They serve as a reminder of how pleased that she was I’d actually had something published.
My recovery has hit a bit of a bump in the road, but the medicos are dealing with it, and it shouldn’t slow the process too much.
