Yesterday, I finally managed to unpack the 15mm figures that Ian Dury sent me some time ago. He gave them to me to help me expand my Belle Époque collection to include several additional ‘European’ imagi-nations, and his gift included both painted and unpainted figures. The former were mainly Austrians-Hungarian figures and are all based. (I think that the cavalry is Romanian, but I am not absolutely sure.)
The were also a number of Zubian-style figures, some of which were not based.
The unpainted figures included the following:
- 24 x Austrian Infantry
- 8 x Austrian Jagers
- 12 x Austrian Gunners
- 7 x Austrian Artillery Officers
- 7 x Austrian Drummers
- 5 x Mounted Austrian Generals
- 18 x Russian Infantry
- 14 x Russian Hussars
- 18 x Romanian Infantry
- 3 x Romanian Hussars
This was a very generous gift and should form the basis of at least two more armies for my collection.
Wow, Bob -
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge load of potential there - and I think your Belle Epoque might have taken on a whole new dimension. The Empire of Goldmunzen-Farbenreich ... or something.
Cheers,
Ion
Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteYou are absolutely right. The new figures have the potential to take the project in a whole new direction,
All the best,
Bob
They look like a great addition to the collection, Bob. What a generous guy 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the new nations….
Martin S.,
DeleteIan Dury has done me a great favour by passing these figures on to me, and I owe him a great debt of gratitude.
All the best,
Bob
That is a very nice collection, really like the artillery in particular but all very nice indeed!
ReplyDeleteDonnie McGibbon,
DeleteI agree that the artillery figures and guns are particularly good, and they will take pride of place in the ranks of the army they form part of.
All the best,
Bob
What a nice haul, A fine addition to your collection! I'm looking forward to the back stories and completed new armies.
ReplyDeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteThey were a great gift, and I look forward to getting them based and their backstory written.
All the best,
Bob
I believe that you've got a good eye there. Not only the cavalry but also the painted infantry and gunners appear to be--or at least be based upon--Romanians (line infantry in blue kepis, chassuers in turned up hats, gunners in blue kepi with brown coats, perhaps a smattering of dorobanti militia, and of course the red coated hussars). Nice!
ReplyDeleteEd M,
DeleteAh! So they are all Romanians! I thought that they were a mixture of Austrian-Hungarians and Romanians … but if they are all Romanians, that makes them an even more interesting prospect for use as the army of an imagi-nation.
All the best,
Bob
I believe that most of them are: you can double check via my post of May 28, 2020 on my blog of my Romanians (plus a uniform plate for reference):

Ed M,
DeleteHaving seen your blog post, I think that you are right about the figures being Romanians. The colour plate is particularly helpful.
All the best,
Bob
Ed is quite correct. Although the figures are a mixture of types, including Russians for 1877 and Austrians for 1859, they were all painted (by the person I bought them from) as Romanians for 1877/78
DeleteIan Dury,
DeleteThanks for clearing that up. I can see lots of possibilities in these figures, and I’ll begin work on them once the Avalonians are finished.
All the best,
Bob
BOB
ReplyDeleteA very nice addition to your forces- Romanians? A very generous gift from Ian for sure. I assume that you will be re-basing the collection to suit what you have already done. Best Wishes. KEV.
Kev Robertson (Kev),
DeleteThey were a very generous gift.
I will renovate and rebase the figures once I have finished the Avalonians. They’ve been sitting on my work table for some time, and deserve to be done first.
All the best,
Bob
