The Imperial Japanese Navy … in 1/1200th-scale: Even more additions

My quest to build up a sizeable force of Imperial Japanese Navy 1/1200th-scale model ships continues, and I have recently acquired the following new ships:

A Mogami-class heavy cruiser, ...

(11,000 tons; 37 knots; 10 x 8-inch guns; 8 x 5-inch AA guns; 8 x 25mm AA guns;12 x 24-inch torpedo tubes; 2 catapults* & 3 floatplanes)

... four Kagero-class destroyers, ...

(2,500 tons; 35 knots; 6 x 5-inch guns; 4 x 25mm AA guns; 16 depth charges; 8 x 24-inch torpedo tubes)

... two Mutsuki-class destroyers, and ...

(1,445 tons; 37 knots; 4 x 4.7-inch guns; 2 x 13.2mm AA guns; 18 depth charges; 6 x 24-inch torpedo tubes; 16 mines)

... two Asashio-class destroyers.

(2,370 tons; 35 knots; 6 x 5-inch guns; 4 x 25mm AA guns; 36 depth charges; 8 x 24-inch torpedo tubes)

* The model is currently only fitted with a single catapult.

  1. That is some fleet you're amassing, Bob. Looking at those vessels got me to thinking about the scales of my 'Mighty Armadas' battleships. What scale? As toys go, they seem to vary, somewhat. The Yamato and ?Washington? seem to be 1:1600; and Bismarck and ?Iowa? more like 1:1800. I might have to check out what I did with my destroyers!
(I can't figure out what the American? ship is supposed to be!

Oh, well, another project to think about. Meanwhile, I have to hex up the second half of my Jono's World Mini-Marine game board...
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Zpiccolo (Ion),

I must admit to have ‘mixed-and-matched’ different scales of model ship in my wargames. Years ago I had a 1:500th-scale Tribal_class model that I used alongside Airfix 1:600-scale model ships. It was bigger, but not significantly bigger, and I decided that I would rate it as a light cruiser, Her 4.7-inch guns became 5.5-inch guns and I added a few spare twin 4-inch AA guns. She was renamed HMS Odysseus and remained in service until my baby sister trod on her!

I see no real objection to ‘mixing-and-matching’ models in a wargame. After all, it is a game!

Good luck with creating your new hex board.

  2. BOB,
Excellent - your collection of Japanese ships is going along nicely- any plans for a game in the near future ? Regards. KEV.

    2. BOB,
I recon you must have about 16 Japanese Ships- perhaps more. I'd be tempted to collect the American Ships as well-that would be a good idea. Cheers. KEV.

Once I have my pair of Japanese aircraft carriers and I’ve repainted all the models, I will start collecting some USN ships.

      All the best,

  3. Nice models Bob - they remind me of the old Triang toys.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I own several of the old Triang Minic ships, including the battleship HMS Vanguard, four Centaur-class aircraft carriers, two Superb-class cruisers, and three Daring-class destroyers. I may buy some more in due course.

      All the best,

      Bob
