Back on 18th September 2008 (exactly five years ago!) I wrote my first blog entry. It was entitled SMALL BEGINNINGS and stated the following:
The last five years have seen quite a few up and downs. My father and father-in-law have both died, and my wife and I are now retired from full-time work ... and hope to remain so. We have cruised around the countries of Europe – visiting almost every one that has a coastline – and even managed to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to visit the United States and Canada.
The most important things that blogging has done for me are:
After much prompting ... and not a little reluctance on my part ... I have decided to take the plunge. This is my 2,000th blog entry ... and I think that I have managed to do what I set out to achieve just five years ago.
I have now joined the world of the self-publicising, self-centred, self-indulgent blogger.
I intend to share my thoughts on wargaming (and other related matters that crop up) with a wider audience ... probably much to the relief of my wife and wargaming colleagues. So watch this space ... and come prepared to be bored!
The last five years have seen quite a few up and downs. My father and father-in-law have both died, and my wife and I are now retired from full-time work ... and hope to remain so. The most important things that blogging has done for me are:
- I have done much more wargaming in the last five years than I had done in the previous ten years (it is difficult to write a blog if you don't actually have anything to write about ... so I fought lots of wargames so that I did!).
- I have made a huge number of new friends and acquaintances around the world, and have even had the opportunity to meet some of them.
- I have learnt a lot about wargaming – and people – from the feedback regular readers have written in reply to my blog entries.
"Thank you to everyone who has read my blog. My only hope was that it was not too boring!"
ReplyDeleteThanks to you for taking the time to write such an inspiring, varied blog. And rest assured that it has not been boring at all!
Regards
John
Thank you for your shared thoughts. I often start my day with a cup of coffee and your blog.
ReplyDeleteEspecially appreciative of your generous sharing of rules and innovations of the same.
Don

Brigadier Dundas (Don),
ReplyDeleteI know quite a few people who read my blog over a cup of coffee each morning. I hope that they all enjoy it as much as you have.
All the best,
Bob
Itinerant,
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I only realised that I had written nearly 2,000 blog entries two days ago ... and that it was also the anniversary of me starting to blog as well.
Here's to the next 2,000 blog entries!
All the best,
Bob
Simon Miller,

ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your very kind comments. I always try to write something that readers might find of interest ... even if it is about one of my numerous cruises!
All the best,
Bob
Hooray for Bob.
ReplyDeletePete,

Bob
Apparently, you and I define boredom differently as I keep coming back for more.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 2000th post and here's to the next 2000.
Cheers!
Justin
2000! That's amazing! Always find something thought provoking here! Well done indeed!
ReplyDeleteHi Bob,
ReplyDeleteThat is a fantastic achievement and no mistake! Of all the blogs I am following I can add little to the sentiments of Brigadier Dundas.
I am looking forward to the next 2,000!
All the very best,
DC
Justin Penwith,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your congratulations.
I think that it was my wife who asked 'Who will be interested in your boring old blog?' I have just tried to make it as interesting as I could ... with some degree of success, I hope.
All the best,
Bob
Legatus Hedlius,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your very kind comment!
Here's to the next 2,000!
All the best,
Bob
David Crook,
ReplyDeleteThanks for you very kind comments ... and your continuing support.
I can't believe:
1. That I have been blogging for five years and
2. I have written 2,000 blog entries!
I only hope that I will still be blogging in five year's time, and that I manage to write bother 2,000 blog entries.
All the best,
Bob
Good show! Congratulations on the milestone. Keep them coming please.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob
ReplyDeleteOh, well done. Splendid achievement.
Even if I sometimes have to wait a week or two to read it, I always catch up with your blog eventually (or maybe it catches up with me).
The wait is caused by no internet in the rain forest at the base of Mt Kenya on the plantation.
But boring it is not.
Keep it up and best regards.
Arquinsiel,
ReplyDeleteCheers!
I'll try to keep up my output. As long as I think that I have something interesting to write about, I'll write about it.
All the best,
Bob
Arthur,
ReplyDeleteMany thanks! It is great to hear from you ... and I promise to try not to be boring in future as well!
You must be my most remote regular blog reader ... and I always look forward to reading your comments. I'll keep writing if you keep reading and commenting.
All the best,
Bob
Nope, not boring. Entertaining, illuminating, inspiring, yes. But not boring.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your games and rules and thoughts and even bits of your non-gaming life with us!
I find I rarely have enough time and/or energy these days for much actual wargaming activity, so I treasure the various blogs I read all the more for helping to keep me connected, to give me things to think about, and to provide a little spark or nudge to make me want to play a game or paint some miniatures now and then.
Well done, and thanks for all your posts. Always something interesting to read here.
ReplyDeleteHere's to 2000 more!
Best wishes,
Aaron
Fitz-Badger,
ReplyDeleteYour comments were very complimentary ... and much appreciated.
I was pleased to read that my blog helps to keep you enthused about wargaming at times when other pressures are making it difficult for you to participate regularly. It is reading comments like that that makes me want to keep on blogging to the best of my ability. It is also rather humbling.
All the best,
Bob
Prufrock (Aaron),
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your kind comments. Let's hope that the next 2,000 blog entries are at least as good as the first 2,000!
All the best,
Bob
It's been a pleasure Bob.
ReplyDeleteConrad Kinch,
ReplyDeleteFrom one blogger to another ... thank you very much for your very kind comments and support ... and here's to you reaching the same goal!
All the best,
Bob
2,000 posts... amazing! I started my own blog in January 2011, and will make my 200th post later on tonight. That seems like a huge number until I consider that you will have made 10 times as many in about twice as much time. Egads, and... congratulations!
ReplyDeleteGonsalvo,
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your 200th blog entry!
Don't forget the famous biblical expression that 'empty vessels make the most noise'. I think that my wife regards my blog as a bit of any 'empty vessel' ... or is it me that she thinks that about?
All the best,
Bob
