Painting Jacklex figures: Day 6

At this point the figures looked a bit of a mess … and I nearly stopped the process then and there. (My choice of colours had tended to be similar is shade if not in colour, and the ‘inking’ had made the figures look almost monochromatic.) In the end I decided to finish them to see what they would look like.

The base of each figure was then painted. I used Yellow Ochre as I think that it looks better on the tabletop.

  1. I tend to only use Windsor & Newton Nut Brown Ink on bases where the base colour is quite light. I don't use it on figures as much these days.

I am still experimenting with other manufacturers washes and have yet to find one that I really like.

  2. Jim Duncan,

I think that Nut Brown is a bit dark for this colour scheme ... but it was all I had available.

    All the best,

  3. You could try a few highlights on top of the ink and then give it another very light wash with watered down ink.

  4. Jim Duncan,

Thanks for the suggestion. I may give it a try to see if it will improve the look of the figures.

    All the best,

  5. It's turned a bit stark, but I think if you follow Jim's advice you could rectify that fairly easily.

  6. This sort of thing is one reason that I have switched to no wash and a gloss finish these days. A uniform style across units is a good reason to persevere though.

Still, there are worse things than being a little dark. How do they look on a gameboard, at arms length, beside an older unit.

  7. Conrad Kinch,

Stark is a good way to describe how they have ended up.

Not quite the look I was trying to achieve, but I think that it has taught me a valuable lesson.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Ross Mac,

I may well end up going down the same route that you have, if only because the end result looks cleaner than what I ended up with.

I can live with darker coloured figures but think that lighter coloured ones look better on the tabletop.

    All the best,

    Bob
