Building modular fortifications: Part 8 - The complete fortress

I have now finished painting the original wall, tower, and gateway modules of my modular fortress. After quite a bit of thought – and some trial and error – I decided to paint it white as I expect to use it mainly with my Colonial figures. The completed modular fortress –with a small garrison of 15mm-scale Essex Miniatures – looks like this:

Thanks to its modular nature it is possible to create small as well as large fortifications and here is an example of a small fort ... and its garrison:

I now only have to paint the additional modules I have built in order to finally complete my modular fortress.

  1. That has worked out much better than I imagined - giving me ideas of my own. The colour that you have chosen is right as well.

  2. Terrific stuff Bob. This has been an excellent series of postings, and has turned out so very well indeed. Many thanks for posting this. Much appreciated. I'm convinced H.G. Wells is green with envy at this time - I know I am :-)

  3. Bob,

That is absolutely fantastic. Well done. Just top notch stuff. It had a wonderful impressionist quality to it.

  6. Bob K (Bob),

Thanks very much! I was originally going to paint the whole thing grey ... but decided on white when I realised that the grey looked too dark and would not fit in with my Colonial stuff.

Good luck developing your own project,

    All the best,

    Bob

Well I must admit that I though that this looked very ordinary as you progressed through the build but never has a paint job done more favours to a build. It now looks very handsome indeed.

Generally speaking my projects follow the exactly opposite track.

    Cheers

  18. Rumblestrip (Andrew),

Thank you for your kind comment.

I wanted my modular fortress to be generic/timeless, hence its general lack of detail. You are quite right; it did look rather ordinary before it was painted, but I think that now that it has been, it looks a lot better ... which is what I hoped.

    All the best,

    Bob

  19. Hey Bob,

That is one snazzy looking colonial fort. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action soon! Of course, you know, now that the seed has been planted, can a Vauban style fortress be far behind?!

  20. That has turned out lovely Bob- look forward to seeing it in many battle reports over the coming years.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  21. Martin,

Cheers! With luck the fort (or at least some of the modules) will be in use before Christmas.

I have already given some thought to adding further modules to this fortress at some point in the future ... and it might be possible to add a number of Vauban-style fortifications then.

    All the best,

    Bob

  23. Bob,

I may have to reduce the number of times I check your blog, or at least look at it in the middle of the night--you keep coming up with irresistible projects. Every time my wife notices my getting together a pile of new things, our conversation will go something like this::

(her) "Uh oh, you've been looking at Bob's blog again, haven't you?"
    (me) "hominahominahomia..maybe".
(her) "No 'maybe' about it, wise guy. After 42 years I know 'new project fever' when I see it."
(me) "Um, like I said, maybe."

Following these witty rejoinders on my part I plow ahead and enhance my hobby collection further. So it's all good in the end.

Best regards and happy holidays to you and all your readers,

    Chris

  24. Chris,

Please apologise to your wife on my behalf; our respective spouses deserve recognition for their forbearance when we get 'new project' fever!

I always hope that my efforts will spark ideas in the minds of my regular blog readers, and it is great to read comments like yours when they do.

May I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    All the best,

  25. Hi Bob,

Absolutely magnificent! Simple, elegant and timeless looking - and I certainly agree with the white paint job looking the part. I am also thinking that the concept of block construction technique you have used could work with modular towns and built up areas.

Overall though I think you have really captured the Morschauser/Wellsian look and I can't wait to see it in action!

    Very well done Bob!

    All the best,

    DC

  26. David Crook,

Thank you very much for your kind comments about my modular fortress. It has turned out to be even better than I hoped it would ... and the construction technique is very simple and easy to use. Whilst building the various modules I have been thinking about the ways that I can use this method to build other types of structure such as built-up areas ... and even ships!

I hope to use my new fortress before Christmas ... if real life doesn't intervene too much.

    All the best,

    Bob

  27. Two thoughts came to mind when I saw the pictures. The first was "Looks great!" The second was a line from the latest Alamo movie: "We're going to need more men! Alot more men".

  28. Ross Mac,

Thanks for you very complimentary comment.

I must admit that when I use all the existing modules, I actually need a garrison of 22 infantry bases just to man all the fortifications. When I add the artillery positions (which are currently being painted), I would need to add 4 artillery bases as well! That is a large number of figures ... and I doubt that I will ever need to use all the modules at once.

    All the best,

    Bob

  29. Excellent Fort BOB- well at home in Colonial Sudan or the North West Frontier - Egypt...applications are endless. You must be pleased with the outcome. Look forward to the Fort's employment in a Scenario soon. Regards. KEV.

  30. Kev,

I am very pleased with the way my modular fortress has turned out ... and it should be appearing in a wargame very soon.
