The current state of play

As far as sorting out the storage in my toy/wargames room is concerned, that part of the operation is now complete, and the room now looks like this:

(These photographs were taken starting at the door and going around the room in a clockwise direction.)

The next stage of the sort out will involve:
  • Going through each of the white-fronted draw units and sorting out what needs to be retained and what need to be disposed of;
  • Going through each of the stacked Really Useful Boxes and sorting out what needs to be retained and what need to be disposed of;
  • Re-arranging the contents of the white-fronted draw units and Really Useful Boxes so that it will be easier to find and access.
I am not sure how long this will take. For example, my Napoleonic collection is stored in quite a few of the Really Useful Boxes, and in their case all that is required is for them to be stacked so that each nationality is together. On the other hand, my World War II collection is spread between both types of storage and is rather jumbled up, and sorting that out is likely to be a long task.

I intend to take a few days break before I tackle this next stage as I know that the next issue of THE NUGGET will be due for publication very soon, and I need to make sure that I have the time to check it before taking it to the printer and sending it out to subscribers.

    1. The Good Soldier Svjek,

      It didn't look like this yesterday morning!

      I used to have all sorts of different storage 'solutions' in my room, but over time I have rationalised them so that there are only four in use now ... and with the exception of the white-fronted draw units, they have been selected because they seem to be reasonably compatible with one another.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

      I try to keep the room as tidy as possible, otherwise I can never find anything!

      It seems as if Ross Macfarlane is also in the throws of having a big sort out and clear up ... and I suspect that we are not unique in doing this at the beginning of the year.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Very organised!! My collection lives in a chaotic heap in the loft or half painted on the dining room table...much to my wife's annoyance :)

    1. Alastair,

      For years my stuff was in all sorts of different boxes stored in cupboards, on shelves, in the garden shed, and in the loft. When we had the loft conversion done, I decided to try to rationalise my wargaming storage ... and nearly ten years on, it is gradually coming together.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Looks very nice. I wish I had more storage cabinets but most of my gaming materials have to remain in my attic.

    1. David Cuatt,

      When we had the loft conversion done, I bought the cabinets from IKEA specifically to store my books and some of my wargaming bits and pieces,

  5. I could almost admit to being slightly envious of your cabinets, esp the glass doors!

    Good work!

    1. Ross Mac,

      The big advantages of having doors on the cabinets are:
      1. It stops the books getting dusty;
      2. Once closed, the doors 'hide' any clutter

      All the best,

      Bob

      Many thanks for your very complimentary comment. After years of 'making do', I wanted a room that I would enjoy using, and that I could feel comfortable inviting people to wargame in.

      All the best,

      Bob

  7. Wow- if only my stuff was that well organised.

    I think your standardised storage solutions is a very good idea.

    Cheers,

    1. Pete.,

      Like most things in life, it took me a long time to get things right!

      The REALLY USEFUL BOXES are not cheap, but because the different-sized boxes are designed to be compatible with each other, they really are useful!

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. TWR,

      As you know from your own experience, sorting out a wargames room is always a much longer task than you expect it is going to be ... but once it is done, the feeling of success is worth all the effort.

      Good luck with your sort out,

      All the best,

      Bob
