Friegur: An inter-war commercial German wargame

Back in 2012, I wrote a blog post about the German commercial wargame FRIEGUR, which was first published in 1934.

I have recently been contacted by a German blog reader called ThiefMaster with information about a copy of the game that his father wishes to sell. Judging by the following photographs, the game is in a very reasonable condition, and the price (1150€) reflects this.

The game is described as follows:
  • Pawns made of tin
  • Painted in colours
  • Spare pawns included
  • Game board very well-preserved
  • Original player's guide and setup plan
  • One flag replaced (aluminum, no Nazi symbols)
  • Case lid has some damage
  • From around 1937
I’ve told ThiefMaster that I’ll be mentioning this sale on my blog, and I am sure that if anyone is interested in buying this game, a comment will be picked up by him.

Please note that the photographs featured above are © ThiefMaster.

  1. Bob ,
Hope you and Sue are feeling better.
Interesting that the tanks seem to be rhomboidal British WW1 types but with the addition of a small turret as late as the 1930s. The figures are attractive, but the game itself doesn't look particularly appealing, judging by the board.
Needless to say, I won't be making an offer! For that sort of money I'd want professionally painted toy soldiers on diorama terrain.
    Best wishes,
    Arthur

    1. Arthur1815 (Arthur),

We are feeling a bit better than we did. Thanks for asking.

The tanks are somewhat archaic-looking, even for 1933, and the artillery is definitely WW1 era. I’d like a look at the rules, which I suspect are a development of those used in WAR CHESS.

If money was no object, I’d like to own a copy ... but unless I win the a Lottery tonight, it will go to someone else.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Lovely looking figures, and an interesting bit of gaming history, but sadly outside my budget!

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

If I had a copy of the rules, it would be possible to recreate the game ... but the price is too strong for me to buy this copy!

      All the best,

      Bob

That’s interesting. I’ll take a look and hopefully ThiefMaster will contact the potential purchaser.
