Might it be possible to meld ShamBattle with the Portable Wargame?: Part 5: The forces for the play-test

I drew upon my Belle Époque collections for the opposing armies in my play-test. The Burgundians stood in for the Army of Redina and the Schwarzenbergers became the Army of Bluvia.

I selected the following units for each army:

  • A general (6 SPs)
  • 2 x Artillery units (2 x 2 SPs = 4 SPs)
  • 1 x Machine gun unit (2 SPs)
  • 1 x Cavalry unit (4 SPs)
  • 4 x Infantry units (4 x 6 SPs = 24 SPs)
  • Total = 40 SPs

These armies look like this:

Redina

Bluvia

  1. Fine looking armies for ShamBattle Bob. To clarify a rule; when co-located units are successfully hit by fire, all units in that hex take 1SP hit each?

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I’m rather pleased with the figures in my Belle Époque collection.

As to your question … I need to make that clear. All the units in a hex that is hit by gunfire are hit.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Thanks Bob - I read it as such, but then started doubting myself!

    3. Maudlin Jack Tar,

No need to apologise. It was something that I should have realised I’d missed when I read the rules through … so thanks very much for pointing it out.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,
The red kepis are excellent for identifying Redinan troops on the tabletop. Something to bear in mind with small figures and when designing ImagiNation uniforms.
I look forward to seeing them inaction.
    Best wishes, Arthur

    1. Arthur1815 (Arthur),

I originally chose to paint the kepis red to reflect the imagi-nation’s name (Burgundy), but it wasn’t until I put them on my tabletop battlefield that I realised how much it made them easier to see.

I’ve just begun to fight the play-test, and hope to complete it over the weekend.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Hello there Bob,

Lovely looking armies - a very good point about the Red Kepis! I am a huge fan of the whole 6 figure infantry, 4 figure cavalry and a gun with two crew organisation and am planning on using this for my ACW set up. I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out - have I missed something in respect of the Shambattle Medics and Spies?

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

I agree … the Burgundians do look nice!

I’ve opted for the 6:4:2 infantry:cavalry:artillery ratio because I thought that it looked better and allowed me a degree of flexibility when positioning troops on the tabletop. For example, infantry can be shown in line, column or - if the bases are placed back to back - square.

I felt that the hospitals and medical personnel weren’t necessary as I had incorporated a mechanism for armies to recover ‘lost’ SPs. As to the spies … well I didn’t understand what they added to the original game, so I left them out.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Ooo... I do like those armies, Bob. Very pretty - as armies should be, of course! In my world (that I have begun calling Urth Chromatica) they would be Azuria and Grauheim.

The whole project is looking most intriquing.
    Cheers,
    Ion

I must admit that I was pleased when I found a use for these figures, most of which I originally painted nearly forty years ago.

The play-test ‘war’ is now well underway … and it is giving me a lot of enjoyment. (I’d forgotten how long it is since I last fought a solo wargame.)

      All the best,

      Bob
