It just has to be used to make an unclimbable model mountain range!

I recently bought a small Hewlett Packard laptop computer that I can take on holiday and when I took it out of its packaging I took one look at the latter and thought …

… it just has to be used to make an unclimbable model mountain range!

I could use them as it is but I think that it will look much better if I mount them on a base, paint them, and add some texture to them.

  1. That "eggbox" material is nicely textured and would paint up well I imagine.

The texture should lend itself to a simple dry brushing of a lighter colour to enhance it.

      All the best,

  2. Great idea, Bob. Those compressed card packaging wotsits are very handy - one can see a few similar items pop up on the Super Cheap Wargaming fb pages. They’ll look fab 👍🏼.
[ I have two ‘space station buildings’ from similar which are awaiting some warmer weather before being attacked with the rattlecan 🙃.].

    1. Martin S.,

In the past few I’ve used similar packaging to create hills. It’s very cheap and very versatile.

      All the best,

      Bob

PS. Good luck with your space station project.

  3. My thought was "castle!" Or " fortress walls" but they would probably make better mountains......

Thanks for the excellent suggestions. I’d never thought of using them for castle or fortress walls.

  5. Bob, looks more like a Pueblo Indian settlement - or a fantasy one on somewhere like Tatooine in Star Wars.

There certainly do look like that could be the basis of a Pueblo settlement. That’s something for me to give some serious thought to.

  7. The packaging looks more like City Walls or perhaps a Fortress.

They are a bit too tall to be used ‘as is’ as city or fortress walls with my 15mm figures, but would be ideal for use with my 25/28mm figures.

      All the best,

  8. I love it when something comes packaged with that sort of cardboard insert, rather than foam packaging. I have a couple that I plan to use for sci-fi buildings and another that is a more irregular shape good for a natural formation. You really just take the luck of the draw and see what the forms inspire.

    1. Fitz-Badger,

I much prefer this type of packaging although it’s not quite as easy to modify as expanded polystyrene is.

Good luck with turning your cardboard packaging into Sci-fi buildings and terrain.

  9. Bob -
These moulded packing materials always catch the eye for potential ... erm ... potential. Quite a few egg cartons contributed to my WW2 dragons' teeth, for example. I have quite a few sheets about 1-inch think expanded polystyrene I', not 100% sure what to do with. And I have a number of large hills kicking around - only 2 contours, but very thick contours: they look like hills. I have no idea now what they were packing for. They featured - so to speak - in this action...

Years ago I read an article that described turning cardboard egg boxes into coastal defence bunkers. I’ve also seen a video made by a railway modeller who shreds this sort of cardboard and mixes it with water, PVA glue, and plaster to make a kind of modelling paste that he uses to create his terrain.

I agree that large hills made up of thick pieces of expanded polystyrene look so much better than the alternatives. My old friend Ross Macfarlane uses thick pieces of wooden board to create his hills that I think he made from old shelves.

      All the best,

Cheers! All I need to do is to finish renovating, varnishing, and basing my Army of the Commonwealth of Britannia and then I can tackle these mountains.

      All the best,
