Laurania and Maldacia

Due to circumstance beyond my control, I have yet to start adding place names to my map of Maldacia.

In the meantime I have been writing a pronunciation guide for the Maldacian language, just as I did for Lauranian when I first 'created' it. I find that this exercise helps me come up with place names that make sense. It also makes me think about the sort of culture Maldacia will have.

Because both countries have at some time been part of the Roman Empire, the languages are both Latinate in origin. There are, however, some differences in pronunciation and spelling, and there are some imported words that have been absorbed into each country's language.

So as they say in Maldacia, 'Avero bello dio' (Have a nice day).

  1. Hi Bob,

Isn't it funny how a phrase can have different meanings to different folks.

My Laurentine "Dictionary of Maldacian Phrases" translates 'Avero bello dio' as "Give me your money and your women."

I guess it is all a matter of perspective.

  2. Maldacia already grows a character of its own: cheers!

Now, Laurania and Maldacia already existed -and probably already as hereditary enemies- by Lace Wars times (just like Ooblekistan and Tradgarland: hint, hint)....

  3. Jim,

Ah! Isn't it amazing how two countries that almost share the same language can see different meanings in what appear to be the same words!

This could easily be a reason for a serious misunderstanding when - for example - a solution to a border dispute is being negotiated.

    All the best,

    Bob

A Lauranian 'Dictionary of Maldacian Phrases' sounds like it could be a very useful volume to own. Do you have a copy for sale at all?

  4. Abdul666,

They are very likely to be hereditary enemies as they share so much in common. Similar languages, a shared history, both have been occupied by stronger neighbours and have something to prove ... sounds like a very fertile area for conflict!

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. The Lace Wars are a bit early for me ... but you never know!
