Ships of the Nationalist and Republican Navies during the Spanish Civil War: Melilla (ex Aquila)-class Destroyers

The Melilla (ex Aquila was built between 1914 and 1917 and the Ceuta (ex Falco was built between 1916 and 1920. They were transferred to the Nationalist Navy from the Italian Navy on 6th January 1939.

Ships' characteristics:
  • Displacement: 1,594 tons normal; 1,733-1,760 tons full load

  • Speed: 36 kts
  • Armament: 3 x 6" (152mm) (3 x 1) [Melilla only]; 4 x 3" (76mm) (4 x 1) [Melilla only]; 5 x 4.7" (120mm) (5 x 1) [Ceuta only]; 2 x 3" (76mm) (2 x 1) [Ceuta only]; 2 x 0.25" (6.5mm) Machine Guns (2 x 1); 4 x 17.7" (450mm)Torpedo Tubes (2 x 2)
  • Complement: 146
Melilla survived the Civil War, and was stricken and broken-up in 1950.
Ceuta survived the Civil War, and was stricken and broken-up in 1949.
