COW2018: Friday night interim report

Despite an horrendous journey (it took almost exactly four hours to drive from My home in south east London to Knuston Hall in Northamptonshire), Friday evening went extremely well. In a brief ceremony after dinner, Phil Barker and Sue Laflin-Barker were given lifetime achievement awards for everything they have done for wargaming ... The the wargaming started!

I was able to take part in a session of John Armtys's excellent game about survival and promotion in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars (I reached the rank of Major, and was awarded six clasps on my service medal) and spent nearly an hour talking about wargaming with Geordie an Exiled FoG. This latter experience made my day (or evening) and is one of the things that COW is particularly good for; talking to other wargame designers and sharing experiences.

If Friday is anything to go by, this is going to be a great weekend!

  1. WoW! It takes us 6.5 hours to get to Historcon from Cape Cod (450 miles +/-) We still leave the day before and are all settled in when the festivities start in the AM!
Enjoy. can't wait for the rest of your report.

    1. Dick Bryant,

I suspect that most Americans would be amazed to see just how crowded our main (and minor) roads are, and how narrow some of the latter can be considering the volume of traffic that uses them.

At one point I was in a column of vehicles trying to pass a broken down car that was at the top of a steep hill. It totally blocked the lane of traffic it was in, and you had to take extreme care to pass it as you could not see what was coming in the opposite direction. Furthermore, to pass the car you had to cross a double white line down the centre of the road, which is a driving offence for which you can be fined.

I normally expect to make the journey at an average speed of 40 to 45mph; on Friday my average speed was between 25 and 30mph ... and most of that was on roads that have a top speed limit of 70mph!

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hello Bob,

Thanks you. I tremendously enjoyed CoW. With the aid of some gentle encouragement from both yourself and Tim Gow I finally 'took the plunge'. And it was better than I could have hoped for. Likewise that wargaming banter with you was the icing on the cake.

Already looking forward the next one :) I predict a "tented city" in the grounds of the hall next year ;)

    Best Wishes
    Geordie
