The Portable Napoleonic Wargame is now available to buy from Amazon and Barnes & Noble

Far sooner than I expected, Amazon and Barnes & Noble have the hardback and softback editions of THE PORTABLE NAPOLEONIC WARGAME on sale.

  1. Well you can order it on Amazon.co.uk but it says "usually dispatched in one to two months!" I saw this yesterday and your posting made me hope this had changed but no joy. Crazy really and I've no idea who is to blame or whether the message is really true ('cause it could change to "in stock" if I look tomorrow).

Best buy from Lulu I guess.

An odd point: Amazon offers the book it doesn't have for £7.99 with free delivery for Prime members whilst Lulu wants £7.99 excluding VAT, presumably with P&P on top. There's no reason why the prices should be the same - different organisations with different cost and profit margins - but why does Lulu not include the VAT in its quoted prices?

    1. Mike Hall,

I have no idea how Amazon manages its stocks of books. I suspect that the message that the book will be dispatched in one or two months reflects the fact that they want to see how many orders they are likely to get before they have any printed and placed in stock. I fully expect that once they get a few orders, Amazon will show that the book is in stock.

As far as I know, books should not have VAT added to their price, so Lulu.com should only be charging P&P on top of the quoted price.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Bob, you are of course correct. I was forgetting that paper books are VAT free. It still seems odd to see them described as excluding VAT. And the ebook is similarly described when - unless the tax has recently been changed which I'm pretty sure is not the case - VAT is payable so either the description is wrong or the real price is 80P higher.

    3. That should have been 80p. I should only write these comments on my PC where the device does not decide to change what I type. When I typed in a search on Lulu looking for your books it changed cordery to grocery!

    4. Mike Hall,

I understand that VAT is chargeable on eBooks because they are regarded as a 'service' rather than a publication.

As far as I know, the price charged by Lulu includes the VAT so the actual pre-VAT price is £3.19 ... which I think is the price that my royalties are calculated on.

      All the best,

      Bob

    5. Mike Hall,

Ah, the joys of predictive text! I've not seen my surname 'corrected' to grocery before; it usually gets rendered as cordero, the Spanish word for lamb.

(I was once canvassed at my front door by a political party whose representative insisted that my name was Gonkardy. Needless to say, they did not get my vote!)

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Yup shows in amazon.ca as well. I think I'll hold off until Huzzah in case any of the vendors there have a copy. Always like to support them when I can though I have such off the beaten track wants and a tight budget I am sometime hardpressed to do so these days.

    1. Ross Mac,

I do hope that the vendors at 'Huzzah' will have my book in stock, but if not, let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I had a couple of Amazon gift cards knocking about so I ordered a hardback edition from Amazon. This avoids any detrimental effect on my 'normal' wargames budget.

I'll let you know how long it really took to arrive.

I have the PDF to peruse in the mean time.

I am planning to use the Divisional version with 10mm figures and Heroscape tiles. This will require a minimal adjustment.

Figure are on order, MDF bases arrived today and I have tons of Heroscape tiles.

    1. Jim Duncan,

I would hope that once someone orders a copy of the book, Amazon will begin stocking it. Past experience would suggest that you should get your copy within a fortnight ... but I'd be interested to know when it does arrive.

10mm figures and Heroscape? I have a load of the latter but have never tried painting or using 10mm-scale figures. I look forward to seeing what they look like.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. My order was placed today, 14th January, Amazon suggest the delivery window will be 9th February to 16th March.

I'll blog some of the 10mm figures on Heroscape tiles in a day or so.

    3. Jim Duncan,

That is interesting information. It is my understanding that Amazon uses its own 'print on demand' facility for books like mine, and that they use licenced copies of the necessary files provided by Lulu. As Lulu seem to be able to print a book on demand and deliver it in five days, Amazon's predicted delivery dates seem a bit wrong. Even if they are buying the books ready printed from Lulu, three to four weeks seems a long time for them to have them delivered to their warehouse and then sent out,

I'll be interested to find out when the book actually arrives.

      All the best,

      Bob

    4. Hi Bob

My copy of your book arrived this morning, February 4th.

I have an over strength French Division ready to fight and I purchased an equivalent Austrian division at Vapnartak yesterday.

      Will painting and playing soon.

  7. Well I have joined the PNW club today and it looks a good read from which games will be played, you cannot ask for more than that. I also hope it saves my unpainted 1/72 plastic figure collections from the purgatory or rather limbo of the dark recesses of my loft ;) Cheers Bob

  8. My copy of The Portable Napoleonic Wargame came in the post yesterday and I'm looking forward to trying the rules out. I'll be using two sets of the Perry brothers' "TravelBattle" figures and terrain which should hopefully work a treat.
