I subscribe to Readly and one of the magazines I can read online is MINIATURE WARGAMES. The latest issue was of particular interest because the PORTABLE WARGAME is mentioned twice.
- Portable Middleton by Arthur Harman is a small Portable Wargame scenario for the Battle of Middleton Cheney 1643.
- The Second Portable Wargame Companion is reviewed by Chris Jarvis in the magazine’s RECCE section.
I might buy a printed copy of this issue if I happen to see it on sale as some of the other articles look interesting, including one by Arthur Harman about edible casualty markers!
Nice! Thanks for the head's up. My library app has the magazine and a year's back issues - though it doesn't have September's yet, presumably a different cutoff date. I'm looking forward to exploring a couple new periodicals.
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
DeleteAs I wrote in my blog post, I read my copy using Readly. My wife and I went shopping today and the printed edition wasn’t on sale as yet.
All the best,
Bob
Odd. My copy turned uo in the post last Wednesady (9th August) - I can't think why it would take so long to reach the shops (unless they've already sold out?). And, to be a bit pedantic, it's actually issue 485,
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for your forthcoming treatment,
Mike
Mike Hall (Mike),
DeleteI suspect that the copies sent to subscribers go out before they are sent to all the branches of the main newsagents, with supermarkets (which is where I looked) coming behind them.
All the best,
Bob
PS. I have changed the issue number to 485.
The Middleton Cheney scenario is based upon the book published through Amazon by Northamptonshire Battlefields Society earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteTrebian,
DeleteThanks for this information. I found the paperback on Amazon, and if any of my regular blog readers reads my reply and wants a copy, it can be found here = https://www.amazon.co.uk/Battle-Middleton-Cheney-6th-1643/dp/B0BW2SXDRZ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2AJEQWOX6D67P&keywords=the+battle+of+middleton+cheney&qid=1692037108&sprefix=Middleton+cheney%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-1
All the best,
Bob
Bob,
DeleteUnfortunately, the editor omitted my sources - including this book - from the article, perhaps to fit it in. I have also written a very positive review thereof, that I had suggested and hoped he would publish either with the piece or in an earlier issue of MW.
Best wishes, Arthur
Arthur1815 (Arthur),
DeleteI’m sure that the society would have been appreciative of both the mention and your review. Let’s hope that he’ll publish your review in due course.
All the best,
Bob
Good to see the Portable Wargame getting a bit of 'push'. I subscribed to 'MW' this year, as I was buying it quite often and they had a 'free Salute ticket' deal - I think John T is doing quite a decent job with it. Also thanks to quality contributors like Arthur, of course!
ReplyDeleteDavid in Suffolk,
DeleteI get my copy online using Readly, and if there is something that I want a hard copy of, I buy a printed version.
I agree about the quality of the editing and contributions: I think that in general they are better than WI.
All the best,
Bob
