On at least three occasions during the recent LEIPZIG ON THE LAWN wargame, units formed square ... and might impressive they looked as the following photographs show.
An Austrian square
A rather ragged French square ... under threat of attack by enemy infantry
A rather neat Prussian square
54mm figures of real grass! Are there many wargamers who would not find this inspiring?

Hi Bob,
ReplyDeleteWhilst the French square was understandable as they had been flanked by superior numbers I was delighted to see the Austrians and Prussians forming square as it meant that the French delaying tactics had made an impact. It certainly slowed the allies down a little but sadly not enough to effect the outcome. they do look very impressive though!
All the best,

David Crook (DC),
DeleteThe threat posed by nearby Allied cavalry certainly justified the French square. The Austrians formed theirs in response to a very small unit of French cavalry that was roaming the open spaces on the Allied left flank. As to why the Prussians formed square ... well the reason has been lost posterity.
All the best,
Bob
A clear win for the Austrians in terms of style!
ReplyDeleteTim Gow,
DeleteThey were certainly a lot smarter looking that the French ... but I think that the Prussians gave them a good run for their money.
All the best,
Bob
What an impressive square, beautiful!
