In the midst of everything else I have been doing of late, I have still been making slow but steady progress with painting some of my Heroscape hexed terrain.
First and foremost, I have glued together eight of the 24-hex terrain pieces and painted them with Humbrol Matt Light Earth (No.119) enamel paint. This has created a 12 x 16 baseboard (with a total of 192 hexes) onto which I will place the green and/or sand-coloured Heroscape hexes that will form my terrain.
So why bother to paint the baseboard ... and why choose that colour?
I chose to paint the baseboard so that I could use it 'as is' if I wanted to, but the main reason was that by a bit of careful placing, I could create trenches that were actually below the level of the rest of the terrain.

As to the choice of colour ... well it seemed to be the best choice for a neutral colour that would go with both the green and sand-coloured terrain that I had painted.A number of Essex Miniatures 15mm US Infantry in a Heroscape trench.
Stu Rat,
ReplyDeleteI am also looking at preparing an 8 x 8 hexed grid for smaller battles using some of my spare Heroscape hexes, rather as I used chessboards in some of my developmental games.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob,
ReplyDeleteThat is a very practical choice of colour for the 'base' and will look very effective for trenches for sure.
All the best,
DC
David Crook,
DeleteCheers! I was originally going to paint them green, and then realised that a light earth colour was a more appropriate choice to make.
All the best,
Bob
Very smart looking idea Bob, excellent for trenches, gun positions and roads.
ReplyDeleteMIN ManofTin,
DeleteThanks. It was inspired by your use of Heroscape hexes.
All the best,
Bob
Clever idea for the trenches. A WW1 trench raiding game would be a distinct possibility now.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Pete.
Pete.,
DeleteLike most good ideas, I got it from someone else (i.e. in this case from looking at what Man of Tin had done with his Heroscape hexed terrain).
All the best,
Bob
Neat Idea
ReplyDeleteGeordie an Exiled FoG,
DeleteCheers! I am also thinking about putting together a smaller 9 x 8 version that I can easily carry around with me.
All the best,
Bob
