The Budget Model Railways Challenge: My border fortress

I have managed to convert my toy wooden castle into a border fortress for my floating shelf model railway layout ... and it looks like this:

The as-yet-unpainted border fortress with a garrison of 15mm Essex Miniatures Colonial figures from my Belle Époque collection.

I still have quite a few bits of the original wooden castle left ...

... and I intend to use them as the basis of other buildings for my layout.

  1. That toy castle is really nice Bob. Looks perfect for 15mm figures.
I have added scratch-build castle to my ever growing project list.

    1. Maudlin Jack Tar,

Cheers! I’m hoping to paint it over the next few days … assuming that it isn’t too hot in my toy/wargame room.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Mark Cordone,

The leftover towers look suitable for conversion into a church or similar style of building.

      All the best,

  3. BOB,
Well done there on the smaller version of your Castle- the 15mm figures look just great manning the walls. All the best. KEV.

Cheers! I hope that it would look all right with my 15mm Essex Miniatures … and it does! The next thing to do is to paint it.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Very nice conversion/kitbash. Are you keeping the miniatures in your border fortress when placing it on the layout?

    1. Roger,

Cheers! I may well ‘dress’ the layout with some of these figures when it is running, I may even paint some civilian figures (probably from Irregular Miniatures) to put on the layout.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Bob -
That's Fort Zinderneuf, as ever was! - in bits now, but more in need of connecting up than rearranging.

Very true! I did try to get hold of an old Airfix Foreign Legion fort for the layout but it would have been too big and too expensive!

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. That's a handy bit of kit. Church tower was the first thing that came to my mind too! You could also have opposing forts with all the spare bits.

    1. Nundanket,

Cheers! I don’t need a church on this particular floating shelf layout … but I may do on the next one!

      All the best,

  7. Bob,
Your figures fit the crenellations of the fort walls very well, but if I was a member of the gun crew I'd be worried the recoil would send it over the edge of the platform...
And how did they get it up there in the first place? A task for members of the Royal Tournament Royal Navy Field Gun Race teams, perhaps.
I look forward to seeing the fort on your layout.
    Best wishes, Arthur

The gun is ‘for illustrative purposes’ and will be replaced by a much larger gun on a parapet carriage or on some sort of swivelling mounting.

It would have been mounted there using the usual sweat and ingenuity of some military engineers, probably using some sort of ‘A’ frame or sheerlegs.

      All the best,

      Bob
