I spent Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon at what I consider to be the best wargame event in the world … the Conference of Wargamers (COW). During this year’s conference, I took part in the following sessions:
- APOCALYPSE DILEMMAS – THE PLENARY GAME: This session was based on a number of scenarios generated by SPI's 1973 game. Players were split into NATO and Soviet teams, and each player had a specific role within their team. (I was an Admiral of the Soviet Red Banner Northern Fleet.) The teams devised a response to each of the scenarios, and then these responses were compared to see if they would result in a nuclear exchange.
- PADDY’S PUB: This was a committee-style ‘dark’ game that was set in a pub and that involved the players portraying members of the Provisional IRA who were tasked with identifying potential targets and planning suitable operations to deal with those targets.
- IT’S A FAIR KOP: This was a Boer War lawn game using 54mm toy soldiers and matchstick-firing cannon. A British infantry brigade comprising four infantry battalions, artillery, and a cavalry regiment were tasked with attacking a Boer force of two Commandos who were in entenchmentslocated between two large hills or kopjes. My role in the game was to act as the brigade commander, Major-General Backsight-Forethought.
- SEA STRIKE REVISITED: This was an opportunity to play Sea Strike (a game that I’d never played before), the innovative 1974 game about then-contemporary naval warfare. I was very impressed by the game mechanisms and hope to use something similar for a World War 2 game in the near future..
- A BALANCED FLEET: This was a game about Royal Navy medium term capability audit and procurement where participants work out what new equipment will need to be fitted to the Royal Navy's ships over the next 10 years ... and then procure them! My team managed to successfully achieve the purchase and introduction into service of additional Astute-class submarines and a multi-functional sonar system.
- LATE OF LITTLE BUGGINGTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL ... : This was a talk and discussion about the selection and development of British junior temporary infantry officers, 1914-1918. It was very interesting and showed how the British Army developed an effective system to train suitable candidates to become ‘Temporary Gentlemen’ (i.e. hostilities-only officers).
- TALES FROM THE HISTORY OF WARGAMING PROJECT: This was a talk about the pioneers of modern wargaming ... including spies, tax evasion, Nazis, back-stabbing and madness … and great fun it was to listen to!
I missed last year’s conference because of my medical problems … and going this year has really boosted my spirits! In fact, it has revitalised me so much that I’m already planning to put on a session at next year’s conference.
PS. I hope to upload some photographs of the IT’S A FAIR KOP game later this week.
Interesting stuff Bob. Looking forward to your post and reports in The Nugget
ReplyDeleteMaudlin Jack Tar,
DeleteWriting my reports/feedback for THE NUGGET is one of the tasks I have set myself to do this week.
All the best,
Bob
The game about Royal Navy procurement looks fascinating, Bob, although given your success one has to question how close to reality the game is!
ReplyDeleteSteve,
DeleteWe did experience delays (we were two year's late delivering and completing the Astute-class project) and at one point it looked as if it might have to be cancelled so that funds could be used elsewhere.
The game was designed to help naval officers understand the procurement process, and featured event cards that drew upon actual events (e.g. a batch of components was lost and/or damaged in transit and had to be replaced, and this delayed progress on a project for months.)
All the best,
Bob
Looks like it was loads of fun! Glad to see you were able to go and enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteMark Cordone,
DeleteIt was ... and I came away tired but full of enthusiasm!
All the best,
Bob
It was brilliant .. and I am constantly amazed as to how everybody's experience is so different but brilliant. Great to see you in good form Bob. Pity about the Blue Navy, we will have to go cap in hand to teh Treasury again and ask for more money. This time we best invest in better electronics and System Testing!
ReplyDeleteAlready looking for CoW 2026
Geordie an Exiled FoG,
DeleteI totally agree! It was a brilliant weekend, with lots of variety from the fun games to the very serious ones. The only problem is that there are not enough hours in the day to go to all the sessions I’d love to go to.
Playing SEA STRIKE for the first time made me realise that I had seriously missed out when I didn’t buy it when it was first published. I suspect that I now won’t be alone in trawling eBay etc., to find a copy now!
All the best,
Bob
Excellent conference all round. I note that except for the plenary session we were at completely different sessions throughout the weekend, which speaks to the quality and variety of what was on offer.
ReplyDeleteTrebian,
DeleteI totally agree. The sheer variety of sessions on offer made choosing which to attend difficult … but I’d rather have that than finding it difficult to find a session to go to.
COW continues to go from strength to strength, and long may it do so.
All the best,
Bob
I really glad you made it COW this year Bob and had such a good time. I'm sorry to have missed you all, hopefully see you next year.
ReplyDeleteMartin Rapier,
DeleteYou missed an excellent COW, but with luck we’ll both be at COW2026.
Hope you get better soon,
Bob
