The Spanish Civil War and Woolwich: Possible YouTube videos?

Back in May, I gave a talk to the Monday Get Together group at Shrewsbury House, our local community centre. It was about THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR AND WOOLWICH and it lasted about an hour.

I have been thinking about turning the PowerPoint presentation into a series of short videos to add my WARGAMING MISCELLANY YouTube channel. This should not be too difficult to do as I can fit in making the videos as and when I have the time.

If I do create these videos and upload them to my YouTube channel, I’ll publish relevant blog posts.

    1. Mark Cordone,

It wasn’t until I did the research that I realised the Woolwich and its resident had played a small roll in the SCW.

      All the best,

  2. I'll keep an eye out. A few months ago I read Antony Beevor's book on the Spanish Civil War. He painted a pretty convincing picture of the failures of the Republican war effort - failures we see repeated in Ukraine's war effort today, methinks.

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

Beevor’s book is one of the better general histories of the SCW and I thoroughly recommend it.

I’m not sure how politically divided the Ukrainians are so I cannot really equate their situation with that of the Spanish Republicans.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. I wasn't thinking so much of Ukraine's internal politics, although we ought to bear in mind the eight years of civil war before the Russians sought to resolve the situation early in 2022. I was thinking more of how Ukraine is handling the war now - the military side. A (counter)offensive might enjoy an early success, but once stalled, usually well short of their objectives, they reinforce failure until they run out of resources.

    3. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

      Ah, now I understand!

It seems to me that despite the lessons learned - usually at a high cost in terms of men and equipment - armies still persist with the ‘one more push will do it’ attitude. It’s almost as if their leadership is so afraid of being seen to have failed that they cannot bring themselves to admit that they have.

      All the best,

      Bob
