A visit to our storage unit yields a lot of useful surprises (5)

The contents of the fifth REALLY USEFUL BOX I brought home from the storage unit included:

Three sailing vessels:

Two river/coastal passenger vessels:

A Turkish coastal gunboat and a German colonial cruiser:

NB. All of the above were made from FIMO coloured polymer clay for my British Dammallia, German Mankanika, and Sultan of Marzibar project. One vessel is currently 'missing' ... the British flatiron gunboat HMS Indolent.

A 1/1200th-scale model of the unbuilt Lion-class battleship:

It was scratchbuilt using parts from Revell models of a King George V-class battleship and a Missouri-class battleship.

    1. Tim Gow,

They were … and I hope to rediscover more in the New Year.

  2. So essentially you made the boats out of clay? That’s really amazing. I’d love to see how you did it.

    1. NickN,

Polymer clay is a very versatile medium to work with. It comes in blocks that can be rolled into flat sheets (I’ve used a cheap pasta roller to get consistent thickness) that can be cut and shaped with modelling tools. It’s then ‘baked’ in the oven to ‘cure’ it. One of its peculiarities is that the various pieces of clay chemically ‘weld’ themselves to each other when the model is ‘baked’.

The other advantage is that it being coloured, the clay doesn’t need painting.

I used the clay to make the gun barrels and funnels but reinforced them with a short length of wire (cut from straightened paper clips) to make sure that they didn’t drop during the baking.

      All the best,

      Bob

You ARE having fun, are you not? Three troop transports under sail, two steam-driven troop transports, a gunboat and light cruiser to escort them...
    Just the thing!

I certainly am having fun … and getting plenty of ideas for projects that will use these ‘new’ figures and ships.

      All the best,

  5. BOB,
I do like your German Colonial Cruiser - a lot of ship in a relatively small space for your grid based games. Cheers. KEV.

It took a bit of figuring out how to build it, but I was very pleased with the end result.

      All the best,

  6. Lovely ships Bob, I remember you building those Fimo ones. Presumably HMS Indolent is lagging behind somehwere!

    1. Martin Rapier,

The ‘missing’ HMS Indolent must be somewhere in our storage unit … but I’m not sure where. If she’s there, I’ll find her!

      All the best,

      Bob
