After trying my best not to succumb to the virus that is currently working its way through the local population, I finally had to admit defeat today and accept that I have the lurgy. (I am told that it is a mystery community virus; everyone has got it but no one knows what it is or where it came from!)
It isn't quite a cold and it isn't quite 'flu, but seems to be a combination of the two. The most annoying aspect of the effects of the virus – other than the general fatigue, aches in joints and muscles, itchy eyes, sore throat, and hacking cough – is the inability to concentrate. If I try to read, I fall asleep in a matter of minutes; if I try to write, most of it ends up as gibberish and needs to be corrected or re-written. (This blog entry took several attempts and over an hour to produce!)
I am supposed to be going to Eric Knowles' funeral on Friday, but if I don't feel a lot better by then, I won't be able to make it. Unless I feel up to it, driving to Lincolnshire and back (it is a three-hour drive in both directions) would be impossible and – in my current state – dangerous.
I am now going to have a hot drink and a doze ... and hope that when I wake up, I'll be feeling a bit better.

Plenty of fluids Bob, hot or cold, paracetamol for pain relief, rest up.
ReplyDeleteJim Duncan,
DeleteI am doing exactly what you suggest, although I take aspirin rather than paracetamol.
All the best (and good luck),
Bob
I’m sorry to hear that you are unwell. Get better soon.
ReplyDeleteStephen Briddon,
DeleteI don't know anyone who had the anti-flu jab this year who has come down with this virus ... a lesson I must learn for next year!
All the best,
Bob
It has been doing the rounds here and I do know people who had the flu jab that caught it. I've had it since the 27th and am only just starting to feel well enough to do some work...
ReplyDeleteMike Lewis,
DeleteI'm sorry to hear that you've also been unwell ... and that the 'flu jab hasn't been that effective. I'm hoping that I feel better by the weekend as I have lots of things that I want to do.
All the best,
Bob
Whisky+ lemon juice+ honey topped up with hot water is your friend here. I'd recommend two before bedtime.
ReplyDeleteHave you get well soon.
Cheers,
Pete.
Pete.,
DeleteGreat advice ... except that I cannot drink alcohol!
Mind you, hot lemon and honey does work, especially if I add an aspirin or two.
All the best,
Bob
Hope you are feeling a little better this Thursday morning Bob.
ReplyDeleteTradgardmastare,
DeleteI wish that I could say that I was ... but if anything, I feel worse. I slept very badly, and in the end I got up at 6.00am to get a drink and just sit in my armchair.
I am hoping that I will feel a bit better tomorrow.
All the best,
Bob
Chin up Bob, these things rarely last longer than a month!
ReplyDeleteRoss Mac,
DeleteI hope it will pass quickly ... although I do know someone who has had the virus for seven weeks!
All the best,
Bob
