German Infantryman: Operations Manual

During a visit to THE WORKS, I saw a copy of GERMAN INFANTRYMAN: OPERATIONS MANUAL by Simon Forty and published by Haynes. Its original cover price was £22.99, but THE WORKS had it on sale for £7.00.

The book is subtitled 'The German Soldier 1939-45 (all models)' and 'An insight into the uniform, equipment, weaponry and lifestyles of the German Second World War soldier' ... and it appears to do exactly that.

Its chapters and sections include:
  • Acknowledgements
  • Introduction
  • Militarism and education under the Nazis
  • The growth of the army and its organisation under the Nazis
  • The soldier
  • Uniforms and equipment
  • Weapons
  • Transportation, bridging and communications
  • Medical services
  • Tactics
  • Appendices
  • Bibliography and sources
  • Index
The book contains quite a few photographs I have never seen before (many from the extensive collection of Tanis Harkonnen) as well as images of modern re-enactors wearing uniforms from the period.

GERMAN INFANTRYMAN: OPERATIONS MANUAL was written by Simon Forty and published by Haynes Publishing in 2018 (ISBN 978 1 78521 168 3)

  1. Thanks for the 'heads up' Bob and will keep an eye out for this as it looks good. It would be nice if they did a British one too.

    1. Steve J.,

Volumes covering the other major combatants would be a set of books that I'd buy.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. The last time I referred to a Haynes manual I was replacing the boot latch mechanism on my wife's Honda. I hope your book is easier to understand....

    1. Tim Gow,

I've looked in the index, and it appears that the German Infantryman doesn't have a boot latch mechanism ... although with the type of boots they wear, you'd expect to see one.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Geordie an Exile FoG,

      He's a card, isn't he!

I'm always on the lookout for bargains ... and this struck me as being a pretty good one.

      All the best,

      Bob
