The right jacket ... but no trousers!

A few days ago, I mention that I had to buy a new suit. After an online search, I found exactly what I wanted on sale from Marks & Spencer at a price that seemed very reasonable. A quick check of their stock levels in the various nearby M&S stores showed that none of them had what I wanted in stock. (Isn't it wonderful that it is possible to do this and avoid having to drive around the local area to visit stores, only to discover that they have not got what you want in store.)

I ordered the suit online and was told that it would be available to collect from a nearby store of my choosing on Wednesday. It was at this point that I jokingly remarked to Sue that I hoped that both the jacket and trousers were coming from the same warehouse, as there was always the possibility of the suit arriving as two separate items.

I should not have tempted fate!

A text message arrived on Wednesday morning informing me that the jacket would be available to collect from the designated store after midday ... but that the trousers were still on their way to the store.

I had to wait until late Thursday morning before I received another text message, this time informing me that the trousers had arrived in store. I collected the suit just after midday, and when I got home and tried it on, it fitted. Interestingly, the jacket and trousers had come from the same warehouse at the same time, but for some reason known only to Marks & Spencer, the trousers had not been put on the same delivery truck.

  1. Hello there Bob,

Good job a waistcoat was not involved! A three way split - probably all from the same depot - could have proven tricky!

This is not just bureaucracy....it’s M and S bureaucracy....

    All the best,

    DC

  2. Ah the pleasures of online shopping Bob! I order most everything online now days, purely for the convenience factor. Amazon are amazing, they sell just about anything and it arrives next day. I am aware however of the toll this is taking on the traditional High Street store, but personally I never enjoyed tramping round the shops to find what I was looking for. I guess a downside of clothes shopping online is that you don't get to try them on before you buy, but these days things just get sent straight back with no quibbles. Glad the suit fitted you OK.

    1. ‘Lee,

For most things, online shopping scores highly over actually having to tramp up and down the local high street or around a shopping centre. (I make a exception when it comes to buying modelling stuff and books!)

Retailing has changed drastically since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. People were already moving towards great online buying, and the pandemic has accelerated the process. That - combined with the much faster courier/postal delivery/returns system we now have - has made online shopping so much easier.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Hi Bob,
Glad you have your Suit and it fits you well. It is somewhat amazing that we can do our shopping via the Net - I ordered my Thomas Engine from Sydney (Free Postal Charge) and a day later the package arrived on my doorstep- just great service. In the old days I'd have traveled into Sydney by Train and gone to the shop- possibly only to find they didn't have what I intended to buy on their shelf...yes, modern technology certainly has it's benefits. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Kev Robertson (Kev),

That is very good service! I have Amazon Prime, and that usually deliver orders next day, but with most online retailers, a wait of three to five working days between an order being placed and it being delivered in more the norm.

It’s nice to actually go to see what you are buying, but as so few shops have any online stock information, you can end up travelling to a shop, only to find that the item you want isn’t in stock.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Bob,
Buying books in person is well recommended- the old saying: "You cannot judge a Book by it's cover"...I've been caught on-line with buying books - only to find their contents most disappointing when delivered. Have a great weekend there. KEV.

I do buy books online ... but only if it’s had a good review from someone whose judgement I value or is part of a series I collect,

      All the best,

      Bob
