Taking a break and recharging my batteries

On Wednesday morning, after a very disturbed night's sleep, I woke up aching all over and generally feeling under the weather. I took a lateral flow test, which proved negative and showed that I was not infected with COVID-19.

Earlier this month I thought that I might’ve been suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and took steps to counter it … but they don’t seem to be working this time. I constantly feel tired and cannot concentrate on anything for longer than a few minutes. To give some idea about how bad things have got, it might be worth mentioning that it has taken the best part of thirty minutes to write this blog post!

I have therefore decided to take a bit of a break from life in general and blogging in particular in order to recharge my batteries. I hope that this will not take very long, but as with all these things, it will take as long as it takes.

  3. I've recently found retiring can be a more tiring than working! The hobby becomes the main 'occupation' and thinking of it, things to do, write, game, can be a strain. And you have been quite prodigious in recent years with the rules etc. Take as long as you need to feel refreshed

    1. Khusru,

I must admit that being retired is great, but that it takes time to adjust … and it is very easy for it to become a new job!

I just need a break to refresh myself after a couple of years where things outside of wargaming have been quite stressful. Usually wargaming has provided a much needed mental break from real life, but for some reason it isn’t doing that at present.

      All the best,

  6. Hope you feel better soon. A break is a good idea. The weather we are having at present does not help a bit. I have seen no sun or blue sky for weeks and it gets us all down. Regards

Cheers! The weather has been unmitigatedly grey for weeks, and it has not helped me feel very positive about life in general, and has had a very draining effect on my motivation. I hope to get away for a break in the sun … COVID permitting!

  7. BOB,
Sorry to hear your not feeling 100% and hope that you'll soon recover and be back to your old self again. I've felt a bit fatigued lately- sleeping a lot and avoiding my painting of soldiers and model making...spoke to my mate over the phone tonight and this lifted my spirits. Best Wishes. KEV.

  13. Take some time to rejuvenate. Besides SAD we’re also dealing with pandemic privations that have kept us for almost two years from enjoying many restorative activities that sustained us in the past. Rest up...return when you’re refreshed.

I must admit that I did wonder if my fatigue was due to a non-COVID virus. We have been regularly testing for COVID, and I suspect that the negative results have rather blinded us to other possible infections being the cause.

  15. Best wishes Bob. I've felt very lethargic for the past month or more; grey skys week after week don't help.
My solution is to just try and do something, however small.
I've added 4x Israeli Shermans through "forced pottering" over the last week.

    1. Neil Patterson,

Cheers! I suspect that there are quite few of us who are suffering from this sort of feeling. I have tried doing small bits and pieces, and have made slow progress on my current FUNNY LITTLE WARS/PORTABLE WARGAME armies project.

I’ve been following your Israeli Sherman project with great interest. Years ago I used the tracks from ROCO M40 155mm SPGs (and laminated plasticard turret bustles and mantlets) to ‘convert’ Airfix and Fujimi Shermans into Israeli Shermans. Unfortunately I left them to a school wargames club … so I have no idea where they are now.

      All the best,

      Bob

  17. Bob,
I'm very sorry to hear you are feeling so low, physically and mentally. I hope the former will just prove to be one of the 'normal' (non Covid) winter ailments that afflict us and that you will soon feel much better, whereupon wargaming may give you pleasure once more. Others have already given you much good advice to which I can add little but my best wishes for a speedy recovery from the malaise. Look after yourself! Arthur

It’s the periods of mental and physical lethargy that I’m finding most draining. I am hoping that a break will help, especially if we can get away for a bit. In the meantime, taking care and avoiding the possibility of catching COVID is important, as I think that having that on top of my current weariness would be very unpleasant.

      Keep safe and keep well,

      Bob

  21. I just read that December in the UK has had the least sunlight since 1956 so no wonder you are a bit down if you suffer from SAD. Do you have a SAD lamp on your desk? I have one and I think it works!

    1. Stryker,

I had not seen that fact … but judging by the weather we have had, it does not surprise me.

I do have a daylight bulb in my painting lamp, and I use it as often as I can. What I need is a break, hopefully somewhere it is sunny … and with luck, I might achieve this in January.

  25. Hi Bob -
The black dog is a beggar, all right, when everything seems blah, and even lying back and reading is a chore, there's heaps of interesting stuff to see and to do - and one knows they are interesting - but the oomph is lacking, the 'get up and go', long since departed, is already a speck disappearing over the skyline... There is almost a sense of 'if I start doing this, then I'm not doing that', which imparts a sense of unease...

Bob - all you can do is wait it out. Sooner or later the iron will (re)enter the soul and you'll back, rarin' to go.

    All the best -

That pretty well describes how I feel ... and things have not been made better by the aftermath of my sister's death earlier this year and a degree of uncertainty about the immediate future. My wife and I planned to have a break, but the recent upsurge of COVID infections due to the Omicron variant is putting that in jeopardy just at a time when I really need a bit of stability and certainty in my life.

I know that I will get better. I've experienced this before, but not as badly for quite some time, so I know not to rush things but to let nature take its course.

      Happy New Year!

      All the best,
