The MF&FMLR model railway project: A bit more work … and a short video!

Since my last blog post about my model railway, I’ve painted the edge of the baseboard matt black and added some bushes.

I have also recorded a short video that shows the layout in its current state and some of my locos and rolling stock on it.

The video can be viewed on YouTube here.

(Please note that this is the first time I have created a video in a very long time and after I had made it, I realised that I had managed to have two commentaries recorded over each other during the first segment. I hope to avoid this next time!)

  1. Well that really does look good Bob:)! Excellent work all round, from the scratch built buildings etc through to the baseboard itself.

    1. Steve J.,

Thanks for your kind words. I must admit that I'm rather pleased with the way it has turned out.

      All the best,

  2. Bob, I cannot but agree wholeheartedly with Steve J on your splendid little layout. A pleasant video too, that shows off your rolling stock very well. The only thing it still needs, in my opinion, are some military personnel at the gun battery and torpedo station to 'bring it to life'.
Well done! But please don't give up Portable Wargaming to become a full-time railway modeller! Best wishes, Arthur

Thanks you for your very kind words about my model railway layout. Although I say it myself, it’s not bad for a first attempt.

Let me put your mind at rest: I’m not giving up wargaming in general and the PW in particular to become a full-time railway modeller. That said, expect to see railways featured in some forthcoming PW blog posts!

I do hope to populate my layout at some point, but for the present, decluttering is taking precedence over everything else.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. BOB,
Well done there on your model railway- I especially like your attention to the scenic aspect of your layout. Just thinking if you move house to a larger area for your modelling hobby you may well add to your model railway and expand the concept if you have more space available. Regards. KEV.

Cheers! The area I was trying to model is pretty uninhabited, but I didn’t want to leave it looking too empty. Building the various terrain items gave me the opportunity to try a number of new modelling techniques … and I fully intend to use them when I build my next terrain board. My intention is to build it so that I can tack it on to this layout to extend it … possibly featuring a harbour.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. BOB,
Thought you'd be interested to know Hardy,s Hobbies makes OO scale 'Home Guard' / 'Dads Army' Figures in metal.

    www.hardyshobbies.com.uk

The December 2023 Issue #198 of the HORNBY Magazine did an article featuring the Figures in a WW2 'Pill Box' Diorama.
I thought that the Figures would look great on your Model Railway. For my metal OO Figures I mount them on 10x10mm squares of thin plastic- so I can move the Figures around.
Anyway- hope you can obtain some HOME GUARD Figures. Cheers. KEV.

I tried the link you suggested, but discovered that Hardy's Hobbies has ceased trading as of the end of January. Another company has taken up some of their ranges, but as yet they don't seem to be producing the Home Guard/Dad's Army figures.

i am currently looking for some suitable late 19th-century military and civilian figures that won't cost me a whole lot of money with which to populate my layout ... but at the moment decluttering is becoming my priority and buying some figures might have to wait until I've moved house.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
Yes- the site for Hardy's has unfortunately closed down...it is good that you are thinking of OO Figures for your model railway- yes, after your house move would be a good time to obtain some figures when you have settled into your new home. Cheers. KEV.

Coincidentally, during today's decluttering I found some painted 20mm British Army figures that might be suitable for conversion into gun crew figures for the Second Word War. They are white metal copies of the original Airfix British Army Battlegroup figures and are proper 00-scale figures that will fit in very well with any civilian figures that I buy.

      All the best,

      Bob

I'm glad that you liked my video. Making it has made me realise that having a vlog to run alongside mu blog might be a good idea and I am investigating the possibilities this weekend.

      All the best,

      Bob
