The decluttering of my toy/wargame room is almost complete

I have almost finished decluttering my toy/wargame room, having spent almost all my spare time over the past week packing stuff into crates and taking it to the storage unit we have rented. I have retained my Belle Époque collection and my model railway layout as well as most of my books so that the room doesn’t look totally denuded and I still have the opportunity to fight a wargame if I want to and to run my locomotives and rolling stock should the mood take me.

I have also retained the unused half of the pasting table that I used for my model railway layout, and I am thinking of using it to create a SHAMBATTLE/3 x 3 PORTABLE WARGAME terrain board. It would certainly give me the opportunity to build upon my recent model railway terrain building experience and will help to occupy my downtime whilst I declutter our home office. (I find that I need a break every couple of hours when decluttering to stop me getting too bored and our home office is on the same floor as my toy/wargame room. I can easily slip from one to the other without having to climb up and down stairs.)

  1. Building a Shambattle board sounds like a great project!

It’s something that I’ve been thinking about, and as I have a ‘spare’ half pasting board, it makes sense to use it.

      All the best,

I still have our home office to declutter, but I suspect that a lot of stuff that is in there will be thrown away rather than kept. As to the model railway … well the board is resting on its end against a wall and takes up very little space and all the locomotives etc., can be stored in a couple of A4-sized boxes that easily fit on a shelf.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. HI Bob

Good idea to keep a selection of projects to allow for plenty of options to keep occupied. Lets hope that you have not put anything in storeage which you then have a real urge to work on before the move.

    regards

As we have no idea how long it will be between putting our house on the market and moving, I didn’t want to be in the situation here I had no wargaming projects I could work on during this period.

I’ve made sure that anything that I’ve put into storage and might need is easily accessible. Fitting our stuff into the storage unit was like a game of Tetris!

      All the best,

  4. Congratulations on your progress Bob, decluttering is never easy for me! Have you ever thought of combining your railway with your toy soldiers? I have had a lot of fun doing just that. I find that 40mm figures go perfectly with my Lionel O Gauge layout!

    1. Brad DeSantis,

Funnily enough, the thought had crossed my mind more than once recently.

The narrow-gauge locomotives etc., are all 1:87th-scale and my 15mm figures are 1:100th-scale, and when put next to each other they don’t look out of place. This may be due to the fact that my figures are mounted on 3mm-thick MDF bases, which means that from the bottom of the base to the top of the head the figures are about 18mm tall … which is approximately how tall a 6’ person will be in 1:87th-scale.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. I like being de-cluttered, (or at least the idea, I'm not sure I ever really achieved it) but it can be well worth the effort to even partially de-clutter.

    1. Ross Mac,

Having declutterred my toy/wargame room, I like the way it looks now that it is far less crowded. For one thing, it looks about twice the size!

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob -
You must have a far more orderly modus operandi I can achieve! Well done! In the light of your recent decluttering progress, I thought I would show on my blog spot - a filler really - where I'm at with my 30YW project. You'll see what I mean when I publish the posting later today... World Champion clutterer; World duffer at decluttering...
    Cheers,

My approach was very much that this was a job that needed to be done … and the sooner it was done, the sooner I could move on to something else that needed to be done.

I look forward to seeing you latest blog post.

      All the best,

      Bob
