Taking a breather

Now that THE FOURTH PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM has been published, I intend to take a few days off from blogging so that I can return to it with my mental batteries fully recharged.

I intend to spend the break constructing some more buildings to paint and base, and possibly visiting our storage unit with Sue to have a bit of a sort out. If we manage to do the latter, I hope that I might find and bring home a few more of the wargaming bits and pieces that I put there nearly two years ago.

I've already built three model buildings ... and hope to build several more over the weekend.

      All the best,

I am already noticing the difference! I’m using my time to do all sorts of wargame-related things … including constructing some more buildings to paint.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. BOB,
You mentioned that most of your figures are by ESSEX- I've taken a closer look at the range and have decided to do the BOER WAR in 15mm using the ESSEX figures- any tips on painting up 15mm? All the best. KEV.

I find the figures to be well cast and made from good quality metal. The bases tend to be rather small, so to paint the figures I fix them with a tiny blob of superglue to a short length of flat wood. I’ve found that they can be easily removed afterwards with a modelling knife slipped between the base and the length of wood.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. BOB,
Thanks for the reply. I'll probably base the figures individually on cardboard. I'll be doing the British for the 2nd Boer War - buff / kahki uniforms. Cheers. KEV.

    3. BOB,
Do you recall the Rules that were used for the Boer War games- I hope to write up my own rules when I have painted up the British and Boers. All the best. KEV.

Basing them individually on cardboard makes lots of sense … and going for the Second Boer War is a great choice, especially as you can field a Royal Navy contingent with 12-pounder and 4.7-inch naval guns on land carriages!

      All the best,

My most recent Boer War battle took place on the lawn at Missenden Abbey and used the FUNNY LITTLEWARS rules. Previous battle were fought using my own BUNDOCK AND BAYONET rules and the late Larry Brom’s THE SWORD AND THE FLAME rules. In the latter case, I used 15mm figures in half-sized units and with the ranges etc. reduced by 60% (i.e. 1-inch in the original rules became 1cm on the tabletop).

      All the best,

      Bob
