Yesterday, I had to go up to my toy/wargame room to look for a book ... and found a copy of Harry Pearson's ACHTUNG SCHWEINEHUND! I sat down in my chair to just skim through it ... and an hour later I was still there and I had forgotten why I went upstairs!
ACHTUNG SCHWEINEHUND!: A BOY'S OWN STORY OF IMAGINARY COMBAT is a hilarious account of one man's journey through the hobby of wargaming, I bought my copy when it was published in 2008, and remember laughing so much when I read it that I actually fell out of bed ... much to my wife's amusement.
If you haven't read this book, I thoroughly recommend that you do. It will make you laugh ... and give a bit of background to the growth of the hobby in the 1970s, 1980s., and 1990s.
ACHTUNG SCHWEINEHUND!: A BOY'S OWN STORY OF IMAGINARY COMBAT was written by Harry Pearson and published by Abacus in 2008 (ISBN 978 0 3491 1568 9).

It's a classic......

Neil Patterson (Neil),
DeleteIt is! It sits on my shelves next to books by Donald Featherstone, Charles Grant, Joseph Morschauser, Peter Young etc.
All the best,
Bob
Glad to hear you can get up to your game room again. This really is a hilarious book.
ReplyDeleteWEK 3,
DeleteI've been sorting things out up there in the hope of doing work on some half-finished wargame figures later this week. As to the book ... well, I totally agree with you: its absolutely hilarious!
All the best,
Bob
I'll look out for it, thanks Bob!
ReplyDeleteRay Rousell,
DeleteI think that it’s on sale on Amazon.
All the best,
Bob
I agree it is a fabulous read and I am glad I'm not the only one who picks up a book. "...and an hour later I was still there and I had forgotten why I went upstairs!"...it usually happens to me when I clean up the study, I start flipping through something and I never finish the clean up.
ReplyDeleteMark Strachan,
DeleteI think that the book should be compulsory reading for anyone who claims to be a wargamer!
I tried to tidy up my 009/H09 model railway stuff today, and thought that I ought to give the locos a bit of a run (they need it every so often) ... and an hour later I had been playing with my model railway and had only tested three locos!
All the best,
Bob
I've never seen the book, Bob, but I do recall seeing that image of the encounter on a cliffside road! I've always thought it was from one of those 'Fleetway Library' war comi--- I mean, graphic novels. I'll keep an eye out for it.
ReplyDeleteCheers,

Archduke Piccolo (Ion),
DeleteYou really ought to read it if you can … and the military graphic story books do feature in the opening chapters.
All the best,
Bob
It's a fantastic book....he is a great writer and uses exactly the right phraseology....I too found this a laugh out loud read!
ReplyDeleteKeith,
DeleteIt should be compulsory reading for anyone who takes wargaming too seriously!
All the best,
Bob
Just the tonic for dreich days and anyone seeking a mirth filled diversion.
ReplyDeleteTradgardmastare,
DeleteVery true! It’s a great book to read when one’s enthusiasm for the hobby goes a bit wobbly.
All the best,
Bob
It's a hoot. Well written, and funny too. I felt so seen.
ReplyDeleteAshley,
DeleteVery true! It’s guaranteed to make the reader laugh … and to wonder if the writer is a mind reader!
All the best,
Bob
Yes, very funny (and relatable) book.
ReplyDeleteI am also prone to picking up a book or other materials for a quick perusal, only to find an hour or two has gone by. ha ha
Fitz-Badger,
DeleteI have read the book several times… and I still laugh every time that I do.
Finding something that you didn’t expect to come across … and then you have a recipe for several hours of unexpected enjoyment.
All the best,
Bob
