What I am currently working on

I seem to have several small projects on the go at the moment, several of which are about come to an end.

Firstly, I have a talk to finish preparing for the Wargame Developments Autumn Virtual Gathering that will be taking place on Saturday 24th October. It is entitled THE MYTH THAT HAS DEVELOPED AROUND THE WESTERN APPROACHES TACTICAL UNIT (WATU) and is a development of the talk I gave at the Conference of Wargamers 2026 (COW2026).

On Monday 28th October I am giving a talk about FREEMASONRY to a group of mainly retired people at our local community centre, Shrewsbury House. The talk and its associated PowerPoint presentation are ready ... but I'll need to do a final run-through and fine-tuning on Sunday.

I am also working on my next YouTube video, which I hope to have finished and uploaded within a week. It is a battle report of the World War 2 wargame from the original PORTABLE WARGAME book.

Once all of these are complete, my next priority will be to do some more work on the next PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM.

Who said one should slow down when one retired?

  1. From what I have experienced of my own short retirement I'm not slowing down just choosing more where the focus goes.

    1. WEK 3,

My retirement meant that I stopped working to live and began living for my hobbies.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. You're making me jealous that I'm still working :-)
    Intrigued by the WATU myth.

    1. Nundanket,

I am sure that you’ll find retirement as enjoyable as I have!

Over the past few years, WATU has gained an importance that seems somewhat out of proportion. My talk attempts to restore this.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. It's good to have a variety of projects in progress, I think it actually improves productivity since if you hit a block you can shift gears with a different project. I'm looking forward to the video and the fifth Portable Wargame Compendium.

    1. Mark Cordone,

I agree about the advantage of having several projects active at the same time. As to the PW Compendium … we’ll, I’m hoping that blog readers like you will contribute an article or two.

      All the best,

      Bob

    3. Mark Cordone,

I am hoping to spend time working on the compendium next week, so if you can send me anything in the next fortnight, it will be very welcome.

  4. I't looks like you're busy in the time coming. I'm not retired, but the following couple of weeks will be busy here as well; We have an Model Railway exhibition coming up this week, and next week our MRC will go on our annual tour to see an foreign Model Railway Exhibition. We'll go to Friedrichshafen in Germany this year.
I'm looking forward to your YouTube video.

    1. Roger,

If my experience is anything to go by, you’ll be busier once you retire then you were when you worked!

Good luck with your train show and travels in Germany.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. Bob -
I had nigh-on forgotten about the Fifth PW Compendium. I might be forced to think about it some more... I seem to recall suggesting some contributions I might submit, but can remember just one of them: The hunt for Sextus Pompey. This was to be PW3x3 campaign along the lines of the Roman Civil War thing I did a couple of years back. Do you reckon it might be of interest?

Ah - a flashback. Was I going to submit a rule set for a 10x10 'Byzantiad' game? I did some play testing for that several months ago (Byzantines vs Rus, specifically), before getting on for some other project...
I took a lot of pics, so I've something to work on...
    Cheers,
    Ion

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

The hunt for Sextus Pompey sounds very interesting … as does the Byzantiad game. I look forward to seeing your contributions as and when you send them.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Thanks, Bob -
I'll shovel through at least some of my growing backlog of blog posts, and get onto it. The 'Hunt' thing is stll in its early concept stages; I'm much further along with the Byzantiad thing.
      Cheers,
      Ion
