A room with a view

My wargames/toy room is on the top floor of our house, and our house is situated near the top of one of the highest points around London. As a the back of the house faces south west, the view from the windows looks across central London.

This morning the air was very clear (probably due to the cold weather) and the view was inspiring ... so inspiring that I thought that it was worth sharing with my regular blog readers.

Please click on the photographs to make them bigger as the detail will be a lot clearer. (If printed, the original would be just under 48" wide!).

To give some idea of what landmarks the view includes, I have annotated the original photograph.

I have also focused specifically on the centre of the photograph, and on the following section I have tried to ensure that the landmarks I have annotated are somewhat clearer.

  1. A view I have often admired from the same vantage point!

  2. Itinerant,

It is reputed to be one of the best views in London.

    All the best,

  3. Trebian,

Well if I can see your office, you can see my house ... but you never wave!

    All the best,

And I hope that you will enjoy it again soon!

  5. Wow, the best city in the world and you have that view of it!

  6. Sorry Bob, Apparently I've become a country mouse after all, I wouldn't trade all that concrete and glass for the woods and hay fields that surround me.

I suspect your shopping opportunities are better though!

  7. Excellent views of such a great city. I have put several similar posts in my blog too in the past, called "The View from my Windiow"

  8. Stryker,

We are very lucky ... but there have been one or two politicians who have suggested that we should pay higher local taxes because of the view that we enjoy!

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. Ross Mac,

To each his own ... but I must admit that I would prefer a view of the sea if I could get one. I find watching the waves hitting the beach and the coming and going of the tides very therapeutic.

As to shopping ... well for wargaming bits and pieces I usually have to rely on the Internet, so I suspect that I am not a great deal better off than you are.

    All the best,

    Bob

  10. Anibal Invictus,

I looked at the view from your window ... and it makes an interesting comparison with my view.

    All the best,

    Bob

  11. Is that Grinnich down in the bottom left of the annotated photo, Bob?

  12. Chris Kemp,

You are right; Greenwich Park and Blackheath are the areas of green just below Battersea Power Station.

    All the best,

    Bob

  13. That is some view!
I do like the view of the mountains from where I live (the local mountains are tall enough to get snow in Winter even though I'm in southern California), and they are fairly close by.

  14. Fitz-Badger,

Ah, mountains! In my mind a view with mountains is almost as good as a view of the sea.

The advantage of my view across London is that the nature of the terrain almost makes it appear as if the city is 'emerging' from behind a barrier of trees and greenery. In fact there are a large number of houses ‘hidden’ in a series of dips between the areas of green (Woolwich Common, then Blackheath, and then the top end of Greenwich Park).

    All the best,

    Bob
