The hottest day of the year so far

Today has been the hottest day of the year so far ... and even though it is now after 9.30pm the temperature has barely dropped.

The prediction is that the temperature will drop rapidly now that it is dark, but the humidity is not likely to change ... and if it remains at 65% (or even rises ... as it easily could) it will be a warm and very sticky night.

Time to switch the air cooler on!

  1. Our hottest day so far exceeded 32 degrees but that wasn't as nearly as bad as any of the dozen days where high humidity turned 31 degrees into closer to 37. Several heat records broken yet again this year.

  2. Ross Mac,

A bit of a breeze would help to make things feel better ... but at 8mph it is making no perceptible difference.

The air pollution is also making life unpleasant. Due to the peculiarities of the local microclimate the pollution hangs in a layer in the air when there is no wind to help disperse it ... and as the evening progresses the layer seems to rise to the same height as our house on Shooters Hill ... making the humidity feel even worse.

Perhaps things will improve overnight ... but I doubt it.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. I don't regard things as uncomfortably hot until well over 35c. It's Winter here in Victoria, Australia with temperatures around 15c, which is cold to me but probably considered warmish in Pommyland. James O

  4. James O'Connell,

The heat is not the problem (I can sit down somewhere in the shade, have a cool drink, and listen to the air cooling system ... and the Test Match commentary), is it the humidity combined with the pollution that makes things uncomfortable and at times downright unpleasant. I seem to spend my entire time feeling sticky and dirty, and the air can be pretty foul at times.

It was 15C here just a couple of weeks ago - in what is mid-summer - and it is predicted that it will go back to that when the current 'heat wave' ends. That may be cold to you ... but to us that is just plain mild!

    Vive la difference!

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. I don't know if you follow cricket, but if you do then watching young Mr Agar was a joy to behold ... and one hopes that he will have a long and successful career in the game.
