The Isle of Dogs ... and some fortified wine

My wife and I have just returned from a Christmas and New Year cruise aboard P&O's Aurora. As might be gathered from the title of this blog entry, we went to the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias = Islands of Dogs) and Madeira (= fortified wine).

The weather was generally better than it had been in the UK, although we did experience stormy weather on the way there and back. As a result we missed a visit to Lisbon (due to high winds and rainstorms) and a stop in La Gomera (due to the fact that the only berth was already occupied by another cruise ship ... and that had been stuck in the harbour for forty eight hours due to high winds).

I will be writing a detailed blog entry about this cruise at some time over the next few days ... once all the unpacking has been done.

  1. The weather these days is getting so much more unpredictable. Makes my plan of going somewhere for more than just a week or two if we can to make sure we get at least some good weather.

We were in Tenerife for the first two weeks in December and only saw the sun for 4 or 5 days. Worst winter in Tenerife in living memory they were saying.

  2. Jim Duncan,

The weather does seem to be going through a bad patch at the moment. It may not have been hot and sunny in the Canaries or on Madeira ... but it was certainly better than it was in the UK.

Better luck with your next trip abroad. I hope that you manage to go somewhere warm and sunny.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. The current plan is 5 weeks in Florida with either a sidetrip to Chicago or a cruise to the Bahamas.

  4. Jim Duncan,

It sounds like a great plan ... and you should be able to enjoy some warm weather whilst you are away.

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. Conrad Kinch,

I thought that the weather during our cruise was not too bad considering that we were going across the Bay of Biscay (twice!) and out into the Atlantic during winter ... but there were quite a few people on Aurora who would not agree.

From our point-of-view it was a very enjoyable cruise. We had great Christmas and New Year celebrations and came back feeling relaxed. I even managed to do some tidying up of my ITCHY AND SCRATCHY NAVAL rules and to produce a modified version of the nineteenth century set for fighting battles set up to 1930.

    All the best,

    Bob

PS. Are you and Mrs Kinch likely to make it over to the London area this year?
