A birthday present to myself

It was my birthday earlier this week, an as a small present to myself I bought a copy of KURSK 1943: THE SOUTHERN FRONT by Robert Forczyk.

I already have the earlier KURSK 1943: THE NORTHERN FRONT by same author (which I thoroughly enjoyed), and seemed like a good idea to buy this companion book. I hope to read it over the next few days, and to get some inspiration for my long-planned Eastern Front/Great Patriotic War project.

KURSK 1943: THE SOUTHERN FRONT was written by Robert Forczyk and illustrated by Graham Turner. It was published by Osprey Publishing in 2017 as No.305 in their 'Campaign' series (ISBN 978 1 4728 1690 0).

Ah, you were uninspired by the copy of my Ostfront scenarios book then!

    Cheers

    1. Rumblestrip (Andrew),

Certainly not true. I've enjoyed everything that you have written about the Ostfront, and it has given me a lot of ideas that are sitting in my project file. I just haven't quite decided how I am going to approach the project, as I keep having different idea about it.

      All the best,

      Bob

    Just joshing!
Certainly I've been thoroughly uninspired by it lately as I attempt to turn it into a POD version, acceptable to Wargame Vault. Two months of work and rework. I would have given up by now but my wife has said she wants a hard copy for her birthday, which is as bizarre a gift idea she's ever come up with. I suspect she just likes the fact that working on it keeps me out of her way for ages - that's the real birthday present!

    Cheers

      I guessed as much ...

I have literally just finished preparing my past blog entries to be printed as a series of hardback volumes. I have been working on this task for over a week, and now that I have finished I have realised just how much I have written over the past nine and a bit years. Well over a million words and nine thousand letter-sized pages!

I know that quite a few people seem to think that writing books and magazine articles is a simple task ... but have no idea just how much time and effort it takes. Even when the text is complete, unless you have the services of an editor and publisher, you then have to do all the checking and formatting yourself ... and that can be really tedious and stressful.

Good luck with getting you book into a hard copy version. I suspect that your wife will be more than happy to see it in its final form.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. Many happy returns Bob.

Just received news that my life expectancy is about 80% for 5 years or more and improving so we can continue to congratulate each other for a few years yet.

    1. Jim Duncan,

Many thanks for your best wishes and - more importantly - sharing your good news! I have been rather engrossed with my most recent (and now finished) project to ask how you were doing, but it all sounds very encouraging.

I hope that you are finally managing to get some painting done, even if it is for only a short time each day.

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Happy Birthday, Bob. You must always treat yourself to a birthday gift! When my wife asks what I want for my birthday I say "nothing"; I usually would have bought myself a birthday gift that I really want.

I have the same conversation with my wife every birthday and Christmas, and always give the same answer. She has become very adept at finding me little presents that are useful ... such as a USB lead that can be used to charge my iPad, iPhone, and Kindle.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Happy belated birthday! Or is that, belated happy birthday? ha!

I always buy myself a few things. At least that way I know I get something I want. Then if someone else gets me something good that's "icing on the cake", as they say. I won't turn down cake either. ha ha

Many thanks for your kind birthday wishes!

I think that as one gets older, one tends to buy ones own 'presents', although it is still nice to get a surprise every so often!

      All the best,

The Osprey book looks interesting.Have you seen Annie Norman's WW2 Russian women figures from Bad Squiddo Games? I think they may be 28mm though. http://badsquiddogames.com/shop#!/WW2/c/21735085/offset=0&sort=normal

    1. MIN ManofTin,

Being born in FEMbruary, I have no problem 'connecting' with my feminine side ... whatever that actually means.

I had not seen the figures you refer to, although I do have a 20mm-scale female Russian sniper and a traffic controller somewhere in my collection. (I can't remember who was the manufacturer, but they were in a special pack that was produced.)
