Listening to Annie Norman on the radio

Whilst on my way to a meeting at Harpenden this morning, I was able to listen to Annie Norman (of Bad Squiddo Games fame) talking about wargaming on BBC Radio 4’s WOMAN’S HOUR programme. She was interviewed by Jenni Murray, who showed a particular interest in models of a Viking shield maiden and Queen Elizabeth I at the time of her speech at Tilbury.

I understand that a recording of the programme is available to listen to online, and as it is one of the few instances when our hobby has been featured positively in the media, it is well worth listening to.

  1. Annie and Bad Squiddo have a lot of good miniatures (although some (most?) might not appeal to non-fantasy gamers).

I might have to give the interview a listen.

    1. Fitz-Badger,

From the sound of the interview, her recent WW2 offerings (which include members of the Women's Land Army and Auxiliary Territorial Service) would certainly appeal to anyone playing VBCW or fighting an Operation Sealion scenario.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. I listened to the interview (and the rest of the show). Good exposure for the hobby and for getting more women involved in it.

Oh, yeah. She is doing some more historical figures for more "modern" conflicts. Something for VBCW and the like, as you mentioned.

      Good stuff!

    3. Fitz-Badger,

I agree. It was very good exposure for the hobby and the increasing role of women within it.

      All the best,

    1. Steve J.,

It was only a small section of the one-hour-long programme, but I felt that it was a very positive portrayal of the hobby.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Mark, Man of TIN,

Annie manufactures some interesting figures that are certainly not run-of-the-mill and are also very attractive.

      All the best,

  5. Worth a listen. Thanks for flagging it up Bob. Jenni Murray certainly seemed taken with it. Especially the Good Queen Bess model!

For anyone else interested the interview is towards the end of the programme (about the last 10 minutes if I recall correctly). Though the other articles seemed interesting as I skimmed through the programme.

    1. Nundanket,

I did wonder if Annie gave Jenni Murray the figure of Elizabeth I after the programme ended. I think that it would have been much appreciated.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Trebian,

Thanks for that, I must admit that I didn’t make a note of how far into the programme that the interview started.

      All the best,

      Bob
