Just to give you an idea how to use some simple html commands, I have drafted this short blog post using Blogger rather than html.
I've then repeated the process typing in html commands in the HTML view to show the difference.
You will note how Blogger adds in lots of extra bits to do the same job. I find this both irritating and unnecessary ... but that is just me being a silly old f*art!

It's depressing to see the editor produced code but it does not surprise me. I've done a bit of editing on e-books and the coding there is frequently a horrible mess (all produced by supposedly professional programs, because who is going to hand code a whole e-book?)
ReplyDeleteSlightly off topic: it's worth noting that it seems one can use HTML in the comments here, allowing a nice sprinkling of bold and italic, though autocorrect (or autocorrupt as I prefer to call it) on my tablet does its best to screw up entering HTML code (it particularly disapproves of the lower case i in italics code).
Mike Hall,
DeleteIt is the repetition of unnecessary code being added that bugs me. I like my programs to look neat and tidy ... and this looks like a real dog’s breakfast!
I do use HTML in my comments, although I would like to be able to underline things sometimes.
All the best,
Bob
I agree, but it seems the old u tag is not accepted and I can see no way of adding an appropriate style within the comments. Maybe I'm not thinking boldly enough though?
DeleteMike Hall,
DeleteThe omission of the ‘u’ command makes no sense to me ... but then, so much of what happens in the world falls into that category nowadays.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob. I assume that the top half was generated by Blogger. This uses CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) notation which is very much the more modern way of formatting web pages. In rather more complicated web pages, you can set the attributes of all your styles in a separate file and just refer to them by name, rather like in Microsoft Word.
ReplyDeleteBy changing the style definition (e.g. saying you want the font to be blue rather than black), it then changes it wherever the style is used.
I would agree though that for a standalone web page like a blog, the advantage is really not noticeable. However, CSS formatting will be continually developed in the future whereas the traditional HTML formatting tags will not be enhanced.
Steve Cordery,
DeleteYou are spot on, the top half was generated by CSS and the bottom half was created using HTML.
I think that if Blogger is going to move completely over to CSS, then they need to give some sort of guidance to users rather than just expect them to just get on with it. If it were possible for users like me to create a style sheet (as I do for the Microsoft programs I use), I’d certainly look at that.
I like the way that HTML works ... probably because it’s similar to the BASIC that I learned back in the 1980s, and I will be sad to see it phased out.
All the best,
Bob
PS. Thanks for the technical explanation. I think that I understood it, and I’m sure that my regular blog readers will find it useful.
On my bookshelf I have the following Haynes’ manuals:
ReplyDeleteThe caravan (2001 edition)
JU87 1935-45 (All marks and variants)
Man 20,000bc to present day (all models, shapes, sizes and variants)
Whiskers,
DeleteFunnily enough, I haven’t seen any of these titles, but I’d certainly be interested in the one about the Junkers Ju87.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Bob, I'm enjoying reading your posts on Blogger. We're trying hard to fix the bugs reported to us as fast as we can. Note that if you use Shift+Enter instead of Compose (non-HTML) editor, it will insert a BR instead of creating a new DIV so it will looks close to what you would type in HTML. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMarc G,
DeleteThanks for your reassuring comment, and for the excellent tip. I’ll try it out on tomorrow’s blog post.
All the best,
Bob
