Other people's Portable Wargame battle reports

Yesterday I suddenly realised that I have not done a regular review of the PORTABLE WARGAME battle reports that people have been featuring on their blogs and on the PORTABLE WARGAME Facebook page ... so here is a taste of what people have been doing!

Andrew Smith has been fighting both Colonial ...

... and eighteen century battles ...

... using some very effective and innovative 2.5D buildings.

Martin Smith has been using the rules to fight American Civil War battles ...

... and Gary Sheffield has been play-testing his Medieval version of the rules.

In Australia, Alan Saunders has been fighting battles with his Seven Years War armies (which he created using figures that were originally playing pieces from RISK).

Cody N T Adams used playing pieces from the AXIS & ALLIES board game to form German and Russian World War Two armies ...

... and he has fought several battles (including Stalingrad) using his figures.

Last, but by no means least, Archduke Piccolo has been using the rules to fight an ongoing campaign based on the Balkan Wars.

Please note that the photographs featured above are © Andrew Smith, Martin Smith, Gary Sheffield, Alan Saunders, Cody N T Adams, and Archduke Piccolo.

  1. Some lovely looking games there and the 2.5D buildings are brilliant and something I'm tempted to have a go at!

    1. Steve J.,

I never cease to be amazed by the variety of terrain and figures used by players!

The 2.5D buildings are magnificent ... and show just how effective they are when used on a gridded battlefield.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Hello there Bob,

There are some fine looking and innovative games on display across the globe - the Portable Wargame is truly international!

Can I take it that games from the Gridded Naval Wargames book would also feature in this ongoing series of posts? I am sure you know why!

    All the best,

    DC

    1. David Crook,

I totally agree. Every time I do one of these photo surveys of the battles people are fighting, I itch to put a game on!

I would love to feature some naval battles in my next ‘Other people’s Portable Wargame battle reports’ ... so you fight them, and I’ll feature them!

      All the best,

      Bob

  4. Bob -
    Thanks for the plug!

Naval units now painted, some modifications done to HNS 'Hydra' and TNS 'Hamidieh', and pretty much ready to go...
    Cheers,

    1. Archduke Piccolo (Ion),

It was my pleasure to mention your blog. It deserves to be well known.

The news about your model ships is great! I look forward to seeing them in action in the near future.

      All the best,

      Bob

  5. I love Mr Smith's flat buildings, they're simple and pretty. I also like the way Mr Adams repurposed this A&A bits. I'm always on the lookout for old copies of Risk that used the miniature soldiers and A&A at garage sales and whatever. They make it cheap and easy to build big armies.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

The 2.5D buildings are very much in keeping with the modelling ethos of Joseph Morschauser.

The reuse of the playing pieces from an old AXIS & ALLIES game is very inventive, especially as old copies can often be found on sale for relatively nothing.

      All the best,

      Bob

  6. Bob,
Looking forward the 17thC PW book as I enjoy using your Napoleonic rules and am using them for an anniversary refight of Villamuriel [1812 Peninsular]. See link below - hopefully !!

I hope that you won’t have to wait too long before the book is published.

I read your battle report with interest, and I hope to feature it on my blog in due course.

      All the best,

      Bob

    1. Geordie an Exile FoG,

It’s a very eclectic selection of battles ... and I think that it shows the strength of the basic PW rules.

I’m pleased to read that you are going down the PW/OHW route. It makes a lot of sense.

      Stay safe and stay well,

      Bob

  8. 2.5D is a new one to me, presumably halfway between 2D and 3D, like a semi flat figure?

    1. Mark, Man of TIN,

You’ve grasped it exactly! The buildings are semi flat, and I came up with the shorthand expression 2.5D to explain the concept.

  9. I enjoy the simplified buildings. One of the projects I never get anywhere on with, is something for my own grandiose set up!

    1. Steve8,

They are very impressive ... and I suspect that once you have devised your own method of producing something similar, you’ll be making loads of them.
