The Portable Wargame Compendium: A progress report

Now that I am recovering from my recent brush with COVID-19, I have been able to resume work on the PORTABLE WARGAME COMPENDIUM.

To date it includes the following chapters:

  • The ‘Snakes & Ladders’ Campaign System (including a campaign report: 'Stalbanian-Khakistan War')
  • Swords, Sorcery, and Squares: A Fantasy variant of the Portable Wargame by Justin Barrett
  • The Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Wargame Phenomenon
  • The original Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Wargame Rules by Mark Cordone
  • Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Colonial & Late Nineteenth Century Wargame Rules (including a battle report: 'Somewhere in the Sudan')
  • Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Eastern Front Infantry Combat Wargame Rules (including a battle report: 'The assault of Portagrad')
  • Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Little Wars Rules by Arthur Harman

In due course I hope to add several other chapters to the book, including one containing Gary Sheffield's Fast Play 3 x 3 Portable Napoleonic Wargame Rules.

I’m still not quite 100% fit, but I feel a lot better than I did even two days ago.

As to the latest book … we’ll I’m enjoying putting it together and I think that it will prove popular with PW users.

      All the best,

  5. Bob,
Good to see you are sufficiently recovered to resume compiling the PW Compendium! It looks as if much of it will be devoted to the Fast Play 3x3 PW, making me wonder whether the latter should have a book to itself, leaving the PW Compendium to contain variants on, and ideas for, the PW rules. But either way, there's going to be plenty of interesting reading.
    Best wishes,
    Arthur

It’s good to be back working on the book! It’s really helped to restore my somewhat flagging morale.

The present book is about sixty pages long, so splitting it into two doesn’t make sense … at present. However, I I get a lot more stuff, I might change my mind.

      All the best,

      Bob

I've just emailed you some ideas, both of which relate to FP3x3PW.

  6. I'm looking forward to seeing the 3x3 rules in print. I'm not on Facebook so it's been tough for me to track them down. I hope you plan to offer a PDF version of the book, I'll snap ot up ASAP after it's ready.

    1. Mr. Pavone,

My present plans are for the Compendium to be published in paperback format, but I will certainly look at the possibility of producing a PDF edition. I hope to publish it in April, but the actual date will depend upon factors that are not totally under my control.

      All the best,

      Bob

  7. If you want to include my 3x3 1st Punic War campaign as an addition to Marks chapter, that is fine. I meant to write it up anyway.

    1. Martin Rapier,

I’d love to include your 1st Punic War campaign! If you have any suitable good quality photos to go with it, I’d appreciate them as well.

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Sure, no problem. I've still got all the original photos. I'll sort out the text descriptions of each battle, maps, OB etc and pick some decent photos.

  8. Bob -
Great to see you're back on your feet again, even if they are still a little bit wobbly.

I like the 'Compendium' already - an exciting TofC in the making!

Cheers! I’m getting there … slowly but surely!

I’m hoping to add quite a few more chapters to the Compendium before I publish it, including stuff for both the standard PW rules and the 3x3 rules.

      All the best,

      Bob

  9. It would also be interesting to see some of the work on portable skirmish wargames. I did a post with some ideas, and I remember you posting that there were others working on it. I'm doing an adaptation of 3x3 for operational level world war two. I want to play a few more games before I post it on the Facebook page.

    1. Mark Cordone,

I really want to add some skirmish rules to the book if it is at all possible.

An operational-level WW2 FP3x3PW sounds very interesting! I’d love to include that in my book!

      All the best,

      Bob
