On Tuesday Professor Gary Sheffield announced on Twitter that there was going to be a bonus Military History Plus podcast released on Wednesday. (I know that Twitter is now called ‘X’, but it sounds silly saying that I’m reading a tweet on ‘X’.)
The bonus podcast featured the Irish military historian and writer Gerry White talking about Irish history from 1913 to 1922. The discussions covered Home Rule, the First World War, the Easter Rising, the Irish War of Independence/Anglo-Irish War, and the Irish Civil War.
This was yet another excellent podcast and I am pleased that Professor Gary Sheffield and Dr Spencer Jones decided to produce this extras podcast.
Sounds most interesting. Thank you for letting us know
ReplyDeleteMark Nichipor,
DeleteThis series of podcasts are all worth listening to, and I’m told that another series is currently being recorded.
All the best,
Bob
I just watched a video about some people from both sides of "The Troubles" and found it really interesting. Learning how a legit movement to secure voting rights and sovereignty saw the escalation of violence eventual involvement of criminal elements was very sad to say the least. Thanks for the heads up, I'll give this a listen to learn more about the history of Ireland and the UK.
ReplyDeleteMr. Pavone,
DeleteI was 18 when the most recent outbreak of ‘The Troubles’ began, and lived through their impact on day-to-day life on mainland UK. It was bad enough in London, but it must have been many times worse in Ireland.
I won’t go into great detail, but I have a degree of understanding of the history behind the events that started in 1968 and degenerated into the violent - and often apparently irrational - conflict between the Protestant and Catholic communities.
Everyday life was disrupted to such an extent in some areas in Ulster that the rule of law broke down, and the vacuum was filled by criminality on both sides that hid itself behind a veneer or wall of bigotry coupled with religious and political differences.
The bonus podcast puts the more recent events in Ireland into a historical context and is well worth listening to.
All the best,
Bob
Excellent edition of the podcast, Bob. Having friends and family on both ‘sides’ of the Ireland conundrum it was very educational to hear Gerry’s analysis. I particularly liked the part, near the end, where he mentioned that when new students to the subject arrive he tells them to ‘park all they think they know’ (paraphrased…) and look with fresh eyes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for highlighting this 👍🏼🇮🇪🇬🇧
Martin S.,
DeleteCheers! I’m pleased that you enjoyed this podcast.
Like you, I have relatives (mostly distant) on both sides of the struggle, and it was interesting to hear such a balanced talk about recent Irish history.
All the best,
Bob
Another ‘bonus’ (ie unscheduled) podcast was very recently released, and is well worth a listen…
ReplyDeleteMartin S.,
DeleteThanks for the heads up. Listening to it is on my ‘to do’ list for this week.
All the best,
Bob
