I have been following a very interesting online wargame design challenge set by Tradgardmastare (whose blog is known as The Duchy of Tradgardland) and that has been accepted by Mark, who writes the Man of Tin blog.
The challenge is to design a wargame that will fit in a matchbox, and both Tradgardmastare and Mark have written about their design ideas on their respective blogs … and mighty interesting their blog posts have been!
I must admit that I have been tempted to accept the challenge, and were I not already quite busy trying to improve my mobility and working on my Belle Epoque project, I could see myself getting quite engrossed in it.

It's a great idea Bob. Started to kick around some ideas myself. Question is, can I follow through and complete something? Real Life and other wargaming projects permitting.

DeleteDesigning a wargame to fit into a specific storage container, whether it is a matchbox, a file box, or a Really Useful Box, is an interesting exercise.
The late Stuart Asquith tailored his collections to fit into his storage system, and its a great way to discipline one’s collecting. It’s something that I’m trying to do with my Belle Époque collection.

I've been following it as well, even smaller than my Hoplite game which fits in a sewing tin.

DeleteIt’s an interesting design exercise, and although a matchbox is a bit on the small size, there are plenty of slightly larger containers - such as your sewing tin - that one could use. As Daniel Weitz has shown, if one has access to a 3D printer, you can create everything yourself.

Temptation having reared it's ugly head, I ordered a pack of matchboxes. Mulling over a samurai skirmish game with some of my recently purchased 10mm from Wargames Atlantic and Pedraken, and maybe a jousting game. Something sci fi with Risk pieces might also be doable.

DeleteI’ve been thinking about a matchbox version of the FP3x3PW using figures from Risk. However, most of my stuff is in storage and I would need to get to the storage unit to get the stuff I need.

ReplyDeleteNot quite 'wargames in a matchbox', but I reckon my micro-towns would fit in a couple of matchboxes. But are we talking a game that fits in a matchbox, or the equipments? A few days ago I discovered some thick cardboard counters I had begun making maybe 40-odd years ago in the spirit of Paddy Griffith's 'Napoleonic wargames for fun'.
Four armies: Red, Green, Blue and Brown, each with GHQ, LHQ, flag, I-VI Army Corps and I-II Cavalry Corps. Perhaps if I were to make a folded map...? Something to think about...

DeleteI think that the intention is that the game should fit in a matchbox … but some matchboxes can be quite big! For example, we have a box of household or cook’s matches that are 10cm x 7cm x 4cm.
I think that your counters and a map would certainly qualify as a ‘wargame in a matchbox’.
